Stargirl Concept Art Reveals Detailed Look At Wildcat Costume

One of the heroes that will be featured on DC Universe’s Stargirl is Wildcat and the costume designers have now revealed closer looks at her super-suit. The next hero joining the DC TV landscape is Courtney Whitmore aka Stargirl, one of Geoff Johns’ personal creations as she is based on his late sister. While marketing has heavily focused on Courtney finding her inner hero, Stargirl will also be telling the story of the Justice Society of America. After one generation fell, the upcoming DC drama will be following Courtney as she leads the next one. Since the initial announcement of the show, a handful of young actors have been added to the cast as heroes who will pick up the mantles of several JSA members.

During the Arrowverse crossover event Crisis on Infinite Earths, the new multiverse revealed that Earth-2 lives once more. But rather being the home of Harry and Jesse Wells, Earth-2 now serves as the Earth designation for Stargirl. For a brief moment, Courtney and several JSA heroes were together, giving fans a taste of what’s to come in May. One of the heroes who was featured in the shot was Wildcat – more specifically Yolanda Montez, who is the second person to carry the title in the lore. After months of speculation, Yvette Monreal has been confirmed to be bringing the character to life. As the show approaches, more reveals are now coming out in anticipation of Stargirl’s series premiere.

Costume designer Laura Jean Shannon revealed on her Instagram a piece of concept art (done by Gina DeDomenico Flanagan) to spotlight Yolanda’s suit. The post focuses heavily on Shannon’s mapping out of the fabricating. Shannon is no stranger to designing costumes for the DC Universe as she created Jefferson Pierce’s first Black Lightning costume as well as several of the Titans suits, including Dick Grayson’s Nightwing armor. Shannon was also involved with Doom Patrol, another DC Universe series.

Little has been revealed about this incarnation of Yolanda as most of the trailers have been focused on Courtney as she discovers Starman’s (Joel McHale) cosmic staff. But with Ted Grant’s Wildcat (Brian Stapf) being involved as one of the original JSA members, Yolanda will surely get the spotlight as she is Ted’s goddaughter in the comics. As the JSA gets new life with this generation, the group will be tasked with going up against the Injustice Society. Members such as Solomon Grundy, Icicle (Neil Jackson), Sportsmaster (Neil Hopkins), Tigress (Joy Osmanski), Dragon King  (Nelson Lee), amongst others, are confirmed to show up in the first season.

Stargirl will officially become the first DC Universe to air on a broadcast network at same time as the DC digital service. Following its streaming premiere on Monday, May 18, viewers will also be able to catch it on The CW starting on Tuesday, May 19 as the show will be taking over for The Flash after it ends its season 6. It’s currently unknown whether or not the series will continue to air on The CW too if DC Universe renews Stargirl for another season. With the coronavirus pandemic still going on, only time will tell if it might delay any renewal possibilities for Stargirl after it completes airing its first season.
