Starfield Gets Its First Positive Update On Future Content In Months

The wait for more Starfield content may be coming to an end as creative director and Bethesda Game Studios boss Todd Howard clarifies what the community can expect going forward. Following the sci-fi RPGs admittedly rocky launch in late 2023, the developer has been slow to respond to player feedback, promising that several massive content patches were in the pipeline but never confirming when they were expected to launch. Following the most recent update’s disappointing reception, players have been pushing Bethesda for more insight on Starfield‘s future and the studio has finally provided an inkling.

Speaking to IGN about Bethesda’s future projects now that the Fallout series is out in the wild, Howard explained that while the studio pivots to focus on The Elder Scrolls 6, it’s still hard at work on Starfield. He said:

“…we’re doing a lot of Starfield work as well. So we have some really good updates that are going to get announced soon for that game. So, a lot going on here.”

While no specifics were provided, it’s encouraging that Howard specified “updates” suggesting that multiple patches are planned for the game. One of these will likely be to prepare for the game’s upcoming Shattered Space DLC which is also expected to launch in 2024.

Starfield Updates Will Never Fix Its Biggest Crime

Updates might be the ticket to delivering on Starfield’s potential, but there’s one particular bad decision that seems like it will remain forever.

What Players Want In Starfield

Some Quality-Of-Life Tweaks Wouldn’t Go Amiss

Aside from more content in general, the Starfield player base is currently more excited about the prospect of some much-needed quality of life improvements to refine some rough edges. Upon its launch, Bethesda’s game was littered with design choices that made the overall experience very clunky, often getting in the way of the fun. These include minor tweaks like a decent local map system to improve navigation or the addition of land-based vehicles to increase travel speed when exploring a planet that largely consists of wide, open spaces.

Whether these features are added in some capacity remains unknown but the Starfield community has already taken issue with how Bethesda has gone about prioritizing its updates. The most recent patch largely focused on fixing hundreds of different bugs and glitches throughout the game while also adding in a more functional Photo Mode, which was a nice addition but irked many who believe that more pressing issues should have been dealt with first. Given the lengthy wait between patches, fans are hoping that future updates are more meaningful in terms of their impact on the game.

As for the Shattered Space DLC, Bethesda promised that it will be available to purchase in 2024 but has yet to provide a specific release date. Starfield is already a gigantic game that’s littered with quests to complete and treasure to discover but the community is hoping the expansion will provide a little more depth to the systems already in place while also adding in some fresh stories. In the interim, modders are producing some excellent add-ons for the game but even this process will become easier once Bethesda releases the official Creation Kit suite.
