Star Wars: The Clone Wars’ Secret Ewan McGregor Easter Egg Rewrote Obi-Wan Kenobi’s Entire Story

Star Wars: The Clone Wars’ Secret Ewan McGregor Easter Egg Rewrote Obi-Wan Kenobi’s Entire Story

Star Wars: The Clone Wars introduced one blink-and-you-miss-it Ewan McGregor Easter egg that completely changed Obi-Wan Kenobi’s character and larger Star Wars story arc. Obi-Wan has been a prominent figure in Star Wars movies and TV shows since the original trilogy, but one Clone Wars plotline radically changed the decades-long perception of the character. Satine Kryze, sister of Bo-Katan Kryze and then Duchess of Mandalore, was introduced in The Clone Wars as Obi-Wan Kenobi’s love interest.

This introduction was a shocking Star Wars twist, particularly in light of the Jedi Order’s strong stance against attachments and Obi-Wan’s seeming commitment to following the rules. Alongside that surprising reveal, though, Satine had even more significance for Ewan McGregor. In fact, Satine Kryze represented a funny Ewan McGregor Easter egg that ultimately had serious ramifications for Obi-Wan’s Star Wars character arc.

Satine Kryze Isn’t Ewan’s First Lover Named Satine

Christian and Satine singing together staring into each other's eyes in Moulin Rouge

In Moulin Rouge, arguably Ewan McGregor’s best-known work outside of Star Wars, Ewan played Christian, a starry-eyed young writer. In the movie, Christian fell in love with Nicole Kidman’s character, a dancer named Satine. Moulin Rouge came out several years before The Clone Wars show, confirming that Obi-Wan Kenobi’s love interest in the show, Satine Kryze, was actually an Easter egg related to this earlier work.

Satine Adds A New Dynamic To Obi-Wan & Anakin

The introduction of Satine Kryze to Star Wars completely shifted the relationship dynamic between Anakin and Obi-Wan. In Star Wars: Episode II – Attack of the Clones and Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith, Obi-Wan was clearly aware of what was going on between Anakin and Padmé to some extent. Despite multiple comments from Obi-Wan indicating a level of awareness, however, he never directly called Anakin out on it. Instead, he told Anakin to be mindful of his feelings, reminded him of the Jedi rule against attachments, and made remarks adjacent to condemning their behavior.

However, while the prequel trilogy showed Obi-Wan troubled by Anakin and Padmé and even judgmental of Anakin’s actions, The Clone Wars showed that Obi-Wan was guilty of the same feelings himself. He didn’t go so far as to actively defy the Jedi Order, but he did tell Satine at one point in the show that, had she asked him to, he would have left the Jedi completely. Given this level of attachment, it’s clear that Obi-Wan didn’t really have the moral upper hand in this case. In this new context, he and Anakin seem more alike than different.

Therefore, while this connection to Moulin Rouge was a somewhat sweet and even funny one, it actually had major Star Wars implications. By introducing Satine, The Clone Wars also introduced a disruption to whom Obi-Wan had always seemed to be. In fact, this one Ewan McGregor Easter egg in The Clone Wars completely altered Obi-Wan Kenobi’s Star Wars storyline.
