Star Wars: The Bad Batch season 2 is finally set to premiere, and one of the series’ voice stars has teased the growing scale of Omega and the clones’ post-Order 66 stories. The next chapter of the Star Wars animated series has battled through numerous delays and scheduling changes, which has become commonplace for many Star Wars streaming projects in the wake of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. The series follows a ragtag group of genetically modified clones after the fall of the Galactic Republic as they meet and take in a fellow modified clone, named Omega. Star Wars: The Bad Batch season 1 saw the team face challenges, both big and small, in a time of serious distress in the Lucasfilm universe.
In an interview with Collider, Dee Bradley Baker, the voice of all the animated clones, teased the larger scale of Star Wars: The Bad Batch season 2. Where season 1 was relatively personal and character-focused as it fleshed out the main characters, namely Clone Force 99, who were introduced in the final season of Star Wars: The Clone Wars, Baker teased that the Empire’s growing size and power will place additional pressure on the heroes, and it will have varying levels of impact on the crew that fans have come to know and become attached to. The key thesis of the season to me is that the Empire is growing bigger, and there’s nowhere to run or hide. And that plays out for Omega as it does for the Bad Batch, as it does for Crosshair. And so these are the larger realities of the Star Wars canon that are locking into place and coming into play, and it’s spectacularly great Star Wars as far as I’m concerned. I just love it.
How The Bad Batch Season 2 Can Reach New Heights
Dee Bradley Baker’s comments certainly inspire an additional level of intrigue to Star Wars: The Bad Batch season 2. While season 1 flirted with some of the larger Star Wars stories, mainly through its arcs with the Kaminoan cloners and glimpses into the Empire’s growing power, it smartly put most of its focus on developing the band of characters that will continue to lead audiences through one of the most tumultuous periods in the history of the Star Wars canon. Now, it appears as though the series will build on what it established in season 1 and open itself up to more large-scale Star Wars stories as its timeline nears the events of the Obi-Wan Kenobi series and the Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order video game.
The Star Wars: The Bad Batch season 2 trailer already showed fans some exciting cameos, including Senator Bail Organa hopping on a speeder bike in an apparent escape effort, and the return of Commander Cody and Captain Rex, the latter of whom is seeking Clone Force 99 out for a mission. What that mission entails is yet to be seen, but a passing mention of more and more clones being conflicted with their orders in the trailer could foreshadow a clone rebellion, though fans know from surrounding Star Wars media that a potential clone uprising could only end in tragedy. The events of season 2 could have serious ramifications on the overall franchise timeline, and it could force Omega to step up and become an even stronger leader within a growing insurgence against the Empire.
There are still many unanswered questions that Star Wars: The Bad Batch could explore in season 2, and Dee Bradley Baker’s comments only add fuel to the growing hype surrounding it. The ending of Andor has left a void in Star Wars content, but Omega, Hunter, Wrecker, Tech, Echo, and Crosshair are inbound to bridge the gap before The Mandalorian season 3 drops in March. Season 1 was a lot of fun for many Star Wars fans, but it looks like season 2 may raise the bar when it premieres with the first two episodes of its 16-episode run on January 4 on Disney+.
