Star Wars: Rogue Squadron – Cancelation, Franchise Future & Everything We Know

Star Wars: Rogue Squadron – Cancelation, Franchise Future & Everything We Know

There have been several Star Wars movies in development since the Skywalker Saga concluded, and one of the most intriguing was the Star Wars: Rogue Squadron movie. Wonder Woman director Patty Jenkins was attached to the project, which would focus on a squad of X-Wing pilots and be the next Star Wars movie to hit theaters following Star Wars: Episode IX – The Rise of Skywalker. However, since being first announced in December 2020, the project has gone from setback to setback, and despite reaching the point that Disney and LucasFilm put out a teaser, it looks like the Star Wars: Rogue Squadron movie won’t arrive any time soon.

Though Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker ended the Star Wars sequel trilogy on a rather divisive note, it was all but guaranteed that there would be new Star Wars movies to come. The Star Wars universe has thrived with Disney+ shows like The Mandalorian and Andor, so a feature-length outing felt long overdue. Along with announcements of Star Wars projects from Kevin Feige and Taika Waititi, Patty Jenkins was revealed to be helming Star Wars: Rogue Squadron, which was even given a release date of December 22, 2023. However, after delays and reported creative differences, the movie’s release date was pulled in 2022, putting the entire project was put into question.

Star Wars: Rogue Squadron Latest News

Star Wars: Rogue Squadron – Cancelation, Franchise Future & Everything We Know

The latest Star Wars: Rogue Squadron news was more-or-less the final nail in the coffin for Patty Jenkins’s Star Wars movie. Rogue Squadron had been presumed all-but-canned for some time after a string of worrying announcements in late 2022, reports in March 2023 seemed to confirm that LucasFilm and Disney have abandoned the project for good (via Variety). Concerns around the future of the Rogue Squadron movie swelled online when Warner Bros. halted production on Patty Jenkins’s Wonder Woman 3, although the director made an announcement via social media that this wouldn’t affect her Star Wars project.

This didn’t provide much reassurance and did little to stem speculation that Rogue Squadron would be canceled. Star Wars: Rogue Squadron had initially been scheduled for a December 2023 release before being removed from the official upcoming Star Wars movie slate. The most recent reports confirm that the removal of Patty Jenkins’s Star Wars movie from LucasFilm’s schedule wasn’t a delay, and that production had indeed halted on the Star Wars X-Wing pilot movie — in addition to Kevin Feige’s Star Wars movie also being canceled.

There Is Currently No Star Wars: Rogue Squadron Movie In Development

The question of whether the Rogue Squadron movie is happening is a tricky one, but the Patty Jenkins version is no longer in development. The Star Wars: Rogue Squadron movie was first announced as part of Disney’s Investors Day in December 2020 with a stirring video presented by Patty Jenkins. The filmmaker is shown in a flight suit on a runway talking about how her father’s career as a fighter pilot influenced this movie about the Star Wars X-wing squadron. However, this was followed by reports of creative differences stalling the project leading to its delay in November 2021 followed by its removal from the studio schedule in 2022.

However, if Jenkins’ Rogue Squadron movie is not moving forward, that doesn’t mean there will not be a different version of the Rogue Squadron movie in future. As a title, Rogue Squadron has applied to many popular Star Wars games, books, and comics throughout the years. The excitement over the original announcement could push LucasFilm to move forward with a completely different movie which shares the title, but tells a new story focused on X-wing pilots. Though it remains a possible future Star Wars project, no announcement has been made to suggest LucasFilm are exploring different avenues for Rogue Squadron.

Star Wars: Rogue Squadron Cast

Patty Jenkins’ take on the Rogue Squadron movie did not get far enough into production for casting announcements to happen. Given what fans know about Rogue Squadron in Star Wars lore, it’s possible there will be some familiar Star Wars characters involved. Luke Skywalker is the most famous Rogue Squadron member, though it seems unlikely such an iconic character will be featured in a prominent role in the movie. Instead, Wedge Antilles could make for an interesting lead for the movie as he took a prominent role in the Rogue Squadron video games and books.

Star Wars: Rogue Squadron Story Details

Though there aren’t many story details for the Rogue Squadron movie that Patty Jenkins planned on making, the title does tell fans a lot about what they might have expected. Rogue Squadron is a team of the 12 best X-wing pilots in the Rebel Alliance who are led by Luke Skywalker and Wedge Antilles to do battle with the Galactic Empire. Jenkins had said she wanted to make the best fighter pilot movie of all time (via DenOfGeek). Beyond that, there is not much known about the story or when it takes place in the Star Wars timeline. The video games and movies spanned from between Star Wars and The Empire Strikes Back to just after the deaths of Darth Vader and Palpatine.

Despite the fact that development has stalled indefinitely, the announcement trailer for the Rogue Squadron movie is still worth a look. Patty Jenkins presented her take on the movie in a personal and thrilling way which made it one of the most anticipated Star Wars projects on the horizon. With the project still uncertain, there are no guarantees there will ever be any footage related to a Star Wars: Rogue Squadron movie beyond this teaser.
