Natasha Liu Bordizzo, actress of Sabine Wren in Ahsoka, confirms she based her portrayal on the “foundation” of the animated Star Wars Rebels series. Tasked with bringing the animated Mandalorian rebel to life, Bordizzo has had the pressure of a faithful live-action interpretation ever since her name was first associated with the role. With the number of Star Wars characters leaping from animation to live-action only increasing more and more, expectations have been set in place to properly embody the characters by studying the source material to understand their past. Now, Bordizzo has confirmed this is something she did while preparing to bring Sabine to life.

In an interview with Star Wars, Bordizzo reveals she prepared for her role by watching “just about every Star Wars project ever made, chronologically, by story.” This, of course, includes Rebels, which Bordizzo is said to have treated as a “foundation” for the journey she takes in the New Republic era – as opposed to Rebels’ Imperial era. Bordizzo also specifies the difference between her portrayal and voice actress Tiya Sircar’s younger portrayal, as she details that she “wanted them to be streamlined, but still separate in a way.” This, in Bordizzo’s mind, would differentiate the younger from the older Sabine, the latter of whom had to make her way back to the free-spirited kid she was in Rebels.
Time Has Changed Sabine Wren A Great Deal By Ahsoka
There’s no question why Sabine is so different by the time she gets to Ahsoka, given all she’s gone through. In the time gap between her last appearance in Rebels and her live-action debut in Ahsoka, Sabine has lost her family and her entire homeworld in the Great Purge of Mandalore. As a result, Sabine and Ahsoka both stepped away from each other as Jedi master and apprentice, with Sabine somewhat blaming Ahsoka for her losing everything and everyone she once held close. This is after she’s already lost Kanan Jarrus and, presumably, Ezra Bridger, hence motivating her to do whatever it takes to bring Ezra back.
Now that Sabine has taken on a new journey and has sacrificed Ezra in favor of remaining faithful to Ahsoka, she has come to terms with much of what she’s gone through, bringing her closer in touch with her old self. Sabine’s next appearances in Star Wars, then, will likely begin to reflect more and more of the Sabine as seen in Rebels. Bordizzo’s portrayal in Ahsoka, however, remains perfectly accurate for all the character’s gone through, and certainly proves Bordizzo used Rebels as a firm foundation.
