Star Wars’ Next Movie May Accidentally Be Repeating A Book Of Boba Fett Mistake

Star Wars’ Next Movie May Accidentally Be Repeating A Book Of Boba Fett Mistake

Star Wars’ next movie, The Mandalorian & Grogu, may be suffering from a mistake that similarly plagued The Book of Boba Fett. The Mandalorian & Grogu will be the first new Star Wars movie to hit the big screen, following in the footsteps of 2019’s Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. The Mandalorian & Grogu being the next movie is a smart choice – Lucasfilm has been struggling with movie development issues behind the scenes for years, so kick-starting the new slate of Star Wars films with a property as big as The Mandalorian will surely prove to be worthwhile. And yet, the film’s announcement has also created another issue.

The success of The Mandalorian Disney+ series has created a wealth of opportunity for Star Wars – animated series like Star Wars Rebels and Star Wars: The Clone Wars have never been more important to the story, countless new characters have been introduced, and The Mandalorian set the stage for shows like Ahsoka and The Book of Boba Fett to be made, too. Unfortunately, however, The Book of Boba Fett suffered from its close affiliation with The Mandalorian, and The Mandalorian & Grogu might be facing a similar problem.

Star Wars Hasn’t Clarified The Fate Of The Mandalorian Season 4

Though The Mandalorian & Grogu announcement was certainly thrilling, the fate of The Mandalorian season 4 has been left up in the air. It’s currently unclear whether The Mandalorian & Grogu is replacing season 4 entirely or if the movie will simply be another addition to Star Wars’ New Republic-era storytelling slate, either prefacing a new season of the show or concluding it entirely. It’s possible that The Mandalorian & Grogu (and any subsequent installments) could replace The Mandalorian, eventually culminating in Dave Filoni’s as yet untitled The Mandalorian movie, but this is all just speculation. This uncertainty could hurt the audience’s excitement for the movie and trust in the franchise’s long-term plans.

Star Wars Is Repeating Its Book Of Boba Fett Announcement Mistake

Mando, Bo-Katan, The Armorer, Paz Vizsla, and Boba Fett.

Star Wars has, unfortunately, made this mistake before. When The Book of Boba Fett was originally announced, Lucasfilm failed to make it clear that the Boba Fett series was, in fact, nothing more than a spinoff. Many believed that The Book of Boba Fett would replace The Mandalorian after season 2, pushing the story forward in an entirely new direction. When that didn’t happen, audiences were equal parts relieved and confused, and the show made it clear why this distinction was never properly made early on. The Book of Boba Fett essentially became a “backdoor pilot” for The Mandalorian season 3, catching up with Din Djarin and Grogu instead of telling a singular, Boba-focused story.

Star Wars needs to avoid this type of confusion in the future. Reportedly, production on The Mandalorian season 4 depends on the success of The Mandalorian & Grogu, despite the scripts for the show’s fourth season having been written and completed before the Hollywood writers’ strike in 2023. So much ambiguity currently surrounds the Star Wars movie slate, and while this is understandable to a certain degree, as Lucasfilm has been burned by announcing things too early in the past, audiences will want to know what to expect from their favorite franchise. Not clarifying The Book of Boba Fett’s place in the franchise early on was a mistake – Star Wars needs to confirm The Mandalorian & Grogu’s purpose soon.
