Star Wars’ Latest Lightsaber Battles Prove We Need More Zero G Fights

Star Wars’ latest lightsaber battles prove there need to be more fights in zero-gravity. As seen in recent projects such as the comics set in the High Republic Era as well as the live-action Ahsoka series, there have been moments when Jedi are called to wield their iconic weapons in the cold vacuum of space. Not only does this instantly raise the stakes, but it also results in a multitude of exciting combat opportunities.

In The High Republic #4 by Cavan Scott, Jim Towe, & Marika Cresta, Jedi Master Keeve Trennis and her allies Ceret and Terec have gone rogue against the orders of the Jedi Council to save Jedi Master Sskeer (Keeve’s old master). Despite having reclaimed the Jedi’s flagship known as the Ataraxia, Keeve and her fellow Jedi are seen defending their cruiser from a large swarm of scavenger droids with Keeve and Terec outside the ship in zero-g, warding off the droids while wearing protective space suits:

With enemies surrounding them from all sides, it’s rather impressive to see Keeve and Terc hold their own against these droids. It also brings to mind Ahsoka episode 3 where the titular Jedi similarly wards off enemy ships from outside her own shuttle.

Jedi Master Keeve Trennis Passes With Flying Colors

Buying Ceret time to send a transmission to send the droids away, Keeve and Terec go all out in their zero-g lightsaber battle, fighting the numerous droids who are coming in from all sides and directions. It’s also their first real challenge since entering the Nihil’s Occulsion Zone to find Sskeer behind enemy lines. As such, it certainly kicks off their rogue mission with a bang during this new chapter of the High Republic’s third publishing phase.

Ceret is eventually successful and the rest of the droids are sent away in search of another target to prey upon. As a result, the zero-g Jedi battle is certainly more brief than it perhaps could have been. However, it’s definitely still exciting scene all the same that proves just how interesting a lightsaber battle can be when a Jedi’s sense of direction and physical orientation is quite literally subjective.

Star Wars Needs More Zero-G Lightsaber Battles

While Jedi fighting in zero gravity has been seen before in animated series such as The Clone Wars, it would certainly be exciting if Star Wars featured more significant and extended sequences that could really take advantage of the creative opportunity. While similarly brief, the live-action Ahsoka series did feature a moment where Ahsoka Tano dons a space suit to defend her ship, using her lightsabers to defend against enemy fighters. To that end, both Ahsoka and The High Republic serve as exciting moments that support the argument for more zero-g battles in the Star Wars canon.
