Star Wars: Daisy Ridley Doesn’t Want to Play Rey After Episode 9

Daisy Ridley reveals that she doesn’t want to play Rey after Episode 9 in a new interview about Star Wars: The Last Jedi. The film, which hits theaters December 15, continues the story of the Skywalker family, the heroine Rey, and the villainous Kylo Ren as they fight over the fate of the galaxy far, far away.

The force-sensitive scavenger from Jakku turned hero is one of the most mysterious main characters to date in the Star Wars universe. Abandoned by her family on the desert planet, Rey spent her life learning how to survive as a scavenger and hoping that one day her family would return to find her. It wasn’t until the events in The Force Awakens that Rey discovered her ability to use the force and her surprising connection to Kylo Ren, which opened up even more questions about her mysterious past – most notably being, who her parents are, and if they are characters that audiences have seen before in this franchise before.

Although Rey has become a key figure in the Star Wars world and Ridley’s performance has been praised by audiences and critics, she reveals in a new interview for Rolling Stone‘s cover story on The Last Jedi that she doesn’t plan on reprising the role of Rey in future films past Episode 9. Here is what she said:

As far as Ridley is concerned, the future of Rey is pretty much set. She doesn’t want to play the character after the next movie. “No,” she says flatly. “For me, I didn’t really know what I was signing on to. I hadn’t read the script, but from what I could tell, it was really nice people involved, so I was just like, ‘Awesome.’ Now I think I am even luckier than I knew then, to be part of something that feels so like coming home now.”

It’s not surprising that Ridley wants to move past Star Wars and become known for other roles in the future. Unlike Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher, and Harrison Ford, who have returned to the franchise to reprise the characters they are best known for, Ridley wants closure for Rey once Episode 9 comes to an end. While fans would no doubt love to see more of Rey in future films, it makes sense why she would want to move onto different projects instead.

Ridley is a young actress whose first major role shot her into super-stardom, and she wants to build off this platform and grow as an established performer in Hollywood. Following her turn as Rey, Ridley has secured multiple roles, including those in the upcoming Peter Rabbit and Ophelia, as well as this year’s Murder on the Orient Express – which is to say, it looks like she is going to have a busy career ahead of her. Ridley has also mentioned in mutiple interviews that she has struggled getting used to the fame and attention Star Wars has bought her, so it makes sense that she would want to take a step back from the epic franchise.

Of course, the Star Wars franchise itself will be far from over after Episode 9 hits the scene in 2019. Lucasfilm and Disney had announced previously that they have Star Wars films planned through to the 2030s after Episode 9.  That presumably includes Rian Johnson’s new trilogy, which will focus on never-before-seen characters outside of the Skywalker Saga. As such, fans will soon be given even more characters and wild adventures to fall in love with, hopefully just as much as they have loved Rey and her journey.
