Star Wars Collector Gus Lopez Reveals What Really Happened To The Death Star Model In Exclusive Clip

Incredible Star Wars collector Gus Lopez has the one and only 3-D model of the iconic Death Star from A New Hope, and he recently revealed a shocking detail about the Death Star’s (almost tragic) history. Lopez has a collection any Star Wars fan would be envious of, spanning Star Wars shows and movies, and those items will thrillingly be featured on Collector’s Call, a show featuring incredible private collections that tempts collectors to make a trade. Lopez will appear in the episode “Meet Gus Lopez,” airing on MeTV on Sunday, May 5th, at 6:30 EST/5:30 CST.

However, Lopez revealed in an exclusive clip that he almost didn’t own one of the most impressive items in his expansive collection—in fact, no one might have, had things gone slightly differently. In the clip, Lopez explained that despite the Death Star now being an iconic piece of Star Wars history, it was almost thrown out.

The massive special effects miniature is truly one-of-a kind, and it’s shocking to hear that it was almost taken out with the trash.

Palpatine’s thirst for revenge has long been a core component of his character in Star Wars, though this has been proven to undermine the Death Star.

The Death Star’s Story Shows How Star Wars Has Changed

It’s almost impossible to now imagine that such a significant piece of Star Wars history could have been thrown out. At the time, Star Wars was still a brand-new franchise, and George Lucas himself has expressed that even he wasn’t sure how the movie would shake out in terms of reception. Perhaps for that reason, it makes sense that the massive model would get discarded.

However, given the incredible impact the movies have since had and how much nostalgia there is surrounding A New Hope, it’s truly unfathomable that the Death Star could have been long gone. Luckily, collectors like Gus Lopez both track down and preserve such pieces, even dating back to the original Star Wars movies. While no one may have known what a legacy Star Wars would come to have with time, it’s clear that, from the beginning, collectors like Lopez had the foresight to acquire props, merchandise, and other memorabilia.

Impressively, Lopez’s very collection goes back to 1977 and includes a range of items, many just as remarkable as the iconic Death Star. A number of those items will be featured on the upcoming episode of Collector’s Call, so it surely isn’t one to miss. Indeed, Gus Lopez’s Star Wars collection is sure to stir up plenty of envy and nostalgia during its appearance on Collector’s Call, to be released on MeTV on Sunday, May 5th, at 6:30 EST/5:30 CST.
