Star Wars Changes How Powerful You Think Chewbacca Is

Warning: Contains SPOILERS for The Book of Boba Fett

The Book of Boba Fett episode 3 action sequence with Black Krrsantan changes how powerful famous Star Wars hero Chewbacca is. As one of the main heroes in the original Star Wars trilogy, Chewbacca is as much a household name as Princess Leia or Lando Calrissian, and while he’s deservedly referred to as “mighty” in the films, his true strength is only hinted at. The ruthless bounty hunter Black Krrsantan is featured in an action scene in The Book of Boba Fett that proves the strength of Wookiees in general and famous fighters like Krrsantan and Chewbacca in particular.

Hailing from the jungle world of Kashyyyk, Wookiees are tall and powerful humanoids who famously speak in a series of howls and grunts called Shyriiwook, one of several Wookiee languages. Though infamous for having short tempers, Wookiees are extremely intelligent, developing advanced technology embedded in their homeworld’s wroshyr trees and using Bowcasters, crossbow-like energy weapons that are far more powerful than blasters. Wookiees were best-known, however, for their remarkable physical strength.

Black Krrsantan, a wookiee bounty hunter introduced in the Star Wars canon continuity’s comics, attempts to assassinate Boba Fett in his palace on the orders of The Twins. Although Boba Fett was the galaxy’s most formidable bounty hunter before becoming a crime lord, Krrsantan quickly overpowers him, ripping him out of his bacta tank and fending off a gang of technologically-advanced former gang members and a pair of Gamorrean guards (a species similarly known for their strength) before Fennec Shand traps him in the empty rancor pit. While every Wookiee is an individual, Black Krrsantan demonstrates the devastating potential strength of Chewbacca in this fight scene, elevating it far beyond what’s been previously portrayed on screen.

In the films, Chewbacca rarely demonstrates his incredible Wookiee strength, usually using his bowcaster or a confiscated blaster in combat. Chewbacca notable nearly strangles Han Solo to death in Solo: A Star Wars Story before the two work together to escape Imperial captivity. Later in the film, Chewbacca effortlessly rips off the arms of a Pyke Syndicate guard on Kessel. Unlike the unscrupulous Black Krrsantan, Chewbacca usually restrains his full strength, with brutal actions like dismembering the Pyke guard being rare, likely due to his status as a main hero and the franchise opting to avoid making Chewbacca seem frightening.

In the Legends continuity, Chewbacca’s strength is showcased quite often, especially in Marvel’s original Star Wars comics. The comics depict Wookiees as being feared by even the toughest criminals and Imperial military operatives, with the mere sight of Chewbacca making some enemies flee. In his many adventures as a Rebel, Chewbacca made use of his exceptional strength, frequently and effortlessly overpowering his opponents.

Black Krrsantan, like Chewbacca, is strong even by Wookiee standards. Given his bounty hunting career and background as a gladiator, it’s no surprise that Krrsantan nearly killed Boba Fett. Unlike Chewbacca, Black Krrsantan has few moral restraints, if any, allowing him to showcase his power in full force in The Book of Boba Fett.
