Star Wars 8: Benicio Del Toro Action Figure Unveiled

Hasbro has unveiled the 3 3/4-inch action figure for Benicio Del Toro’s character DJ in Star Wars: The Last Jedi. The official merchandise blitz for the latest chapter in the Star Wars saga got underway September 1 in a coordinated retailer event dubbed Force Friday II; a take-off of the first Force Friday event before the release of The Force Awakens.

A variety of toys, collectibles and other items officially went on sale that day for the masses, including 3 3/4-inch action figures of characters – continuing a tradition that began 40 years ago with the first Star Wars film when the sale of the figures helped revolutionize the movie merchandising industry.

While the first assortment of action figures included such iconic characters as Luke Skywalker, Chewbacca and C-3PO, as well as newcomers to the Star Wars universe including Rey, Finn, Poe, Kylo Ren, and General Hux, some characters that will appear in The Last Jedi were noticeably absent. Among them a figure of Carrie Fisher’s General Leia, which was announced the morning of Force Friday II; and DJ, the mysterious newcomer to the Star Wars universe played by Traffic Oscar winner Del Toro.

Unbeknownst to collectors, Hasbro displayed Del Toro’s DJ figure at the Hasbro’s HASCON convention over the weekend. One of the attendees of the convention, The Collector’s Hutt, captured an image of the figure and posted it on Instagram.

The figure itself – which sports an excellent likeness of Del Toro – doesn’t appear to tell fans anything more about the character than they already know, since it features the same costume that the actor has worn in promotional photos. It appears to have one accessory – a blaster – although more weapons could possibly come with the figure when it appears in packaged form.

Fans can expect to learn more, though, when they get their hands on the figure, so long was they have the Force Link device that went on sale on Force Friday II. The electronic accessory actives a chip in the figure which plays some of the character’s dialogue, as well as weapon and action sounds.

Unless the film’s long-awaited second trailer drops before the figure is released, the Force Link dialogue will give fans their first listen of lines Del Toro says in the film. To date, the only thing really known about DJ is that he’s a “shady character” and he plays a part of Finn and Rose’s mission in the film.

No matter the case, the release of the DJ figure will come as exciting news to Del Toro fans, who makes his action figure debut with this 3 3/4-inch release. As of this writing the exact date the figure will hit retail is yet to be announced.

Before this, the closest thing to a Del Toro figure came with the release of 7-inch and 12-inch figures of Del Toro’s character in the 2010 remake of The Wolfman, but the Mezco figure obviously bared likeness to the creature in the film instead of the character of Lawrence Talbot. Now, Del Toro fans longing to put a miniaturized version of the actor on their shelf have a reason to howl with delight.
