Star Wars: 10 Canceled Legends Stories That Deserve To Be Finished

Star Wars: 10 Canceled Legends Stories That Deserve To Be Finished

Disney and Lucasfilm may be focused on new projects set in the current Star Wars canon, but the Legends timeline contains many unfinished stories that deserve resolution. Canceled Star Wars projects are nothing new, which is expected for any long-running multimedia franchise. However, this hasn’t stopped fans from speculating on what could have been or wishing that these stories were released, and nowhere is this more prevalent than the Expanded Universe being rebranded as “Legends.” Decades of books, comics, and video games became non-canon, and multiple storylines were never resolved.

Fan campaigns have attempted to convince Lucasfilm to release new stories set in the Legends universe and conclude abandoned narratives. Star Wars has returned to Legends a few times, most notably with the online game Star Wars: The Old Republic continuing to release story expansions. Marvel Comics published Star Wars #108 to celebrate the company’s 80th anniversary, a rare example of a Legends sequel story published after 2014. If Lucasfilm were to permit new Legends stories, Star Wars should begin by finishing 10 canceled stories with the most creative potential.

How To Watch Star Wars Movies In Order

Here is how to watch all Star Wars movies and TV shows chronologically and in order of release, and how each fits into the Star Wars timeline.

10 The Heart Of The Jedi

A canceled novel that fits into the Legends timeline

Star Wars: The Heart of the Jedi by Kenneth C. Flint is one of the more interesting canceled stories because it has received an unofficial release. The novel was meant to be published in 1993 but was constantly delayed while Bantam Spectra focused on developing multiple Star Wars books, leading to its eventual cancelation. Flint has stated that this destroyed his relationship with Spectra and hurt his career as a writer for many years. Still, in 2015, he allowed a revised manuscript to be published on the Star Wars Expanded Universe Timeline fan website.

This release included changes to reflect the rest of the Legends timeline. The story picks up shortly after Return of the Jedi and focuses on the New Republic fighting the Imperial Remnant while the Imperial Senate calls for peace. A paperback version of the book was sold on Amazon in 2021, but the listing was removed because the seller did not receive permission from Lucasfilm. Considering how hard Flint and other fans worked to revive this project, it would be interesting if Lucasfilm allowed an official release and made The Heart of the Jedi part of the Legends timeline.

9 Escape From Dagu

A Shaak Ti Clone Wars story

Another book canceled despite its apparent completion was Star Wars: Escape from Dagu by William C Dietz, replaced by Star Wars: Yoda – Dark Rendezvous by Sean Stewart as part of the Clone Wars multimedia project. The plot centers on Jedi Master Shaak Ti’s mission to rescue prisoners of war from a Separatist prison on the planet Dagu, where she duels the Dark Jedi Artel Darc. Because the basic story is still canon within the Legends continuity, Escape from Dagu could be released in original form or revised to fit into the current Star Wars canon.

8 Knights Of The Old Republic 3

The original end to Revan’s story

Could Knights Of The Old Republic Remake Finally Lead To KOTOR 3?

One of the most hotly anticipated Star Wars video games was Knights of the Old Republic 3, which would have concluded several arcs from the first two games. Unfortunately, LucasArts was restructuring when the game was pitched, leading to KOTOR 3‘s cancelation in development. Star Wars: The Old Republic – Revan by Drew Karpyshyn adapted certain unused elements from KOTOR 3‘s story, and BioWare later returned to develop the online game Star Wars: The Old Republic. Even so, with the previously announced KOTOR remake on indefinite hold, the game could be reworked as the KOTOR 3 fans always wanted.

7 The Force Unleashed III

The second game ended on a massive cliffhanger

Star Wars Force Unleashed 3 Rumors

Like the second KOTOR game, Star Wars: The Force Unleashed II ends on a tantalizing cliffhanger, promising an exciting resolution in the third game. However, LucasArts was shut down in 2013, making Star Wars: The Force Unleashed III one of the many canceled games. While it did not move past initial planning, writer W. Haden Blackman has revealed that The Force Unleashed III would have been more open-world and forced Starkiller and Darth Vader to team up. The lack of resolution to the story makes The Force Unleashed III a priority if Lucasfilm ever returns to the Legends timeline.

6 Battle Of The Sith Lords

Maul vs. Darth Krayt and the One Sith

Darth Maul and Darth Talon - Star Wars Battle of the Sith Lords

Darth Maul returned in Star Wars: The Clone Wars, but this was only one of George Lucas’ ideas for resurrecting the character. While Battle of the Sith Lords was in development, Lucas wanted Maul to team up with Darth Talon, meaning the story had to be set 130 years after Return of the Jedi. The game would have centered on Maul’s clone fighting Darth Krayt and the One Sith, but the Disney Acquisition led to its cancelation. While certain elements would have contradicted the Star Wars: Legacy comics, the story is intriguing enough to be released in some form.

5 A Follow-Up To Fate Of The Jedi

The Star Wars: Fate of the Jedi series ends with Luke Skywalker sending the “Ten Knights” to find Mortis, but this storyline was never resolved. Due to the enormous potential and how the story ties into The Clone Wars season 3, it would likely have been given a sequel had the Expanded Universe continued. With the introduction of a new Star Wars canon in 2014, a follow-up to Fate of the Jedi was never released, leaving the fate of the Ten Knights a mystery. This would be a logical place for Lucasfilm to begin if more Legends novels are greenlit.

4 Sword Of The Jedi

Jaina Solo’s time to shine

The Sword of the Jedi trilogy was announced shortly before Disney bought Lucasfilm and was set to be written by Christie Golden. Not much has been revealed about the story, but the cover art of Jaina Solo, the “Sword of the Jedi,” preparing to fight the Sith on Coruscant illustrates how epic the trilogy could have been. Jaina always played a critical role in the books, but unlike her brothers, she was not the central character of a particular series. Sword of the Jedi would give Jaina her well-earned time in the spotlight and continue the Legends novel timeline.

3 Filling The Gap Between Crucible And Legacy

100-year timeline to explore

Star Wars: Crucible by Troy Denning is the last chronological novel in the Legends timeline, leaving a nearly 100-year time gap between it and Star Wars: Legacy #1 by John Ostrander and Jan Duursema. This creates several unanswered questions about how the galaxy changed between the two stories, leaving plenty of room for more books and comics to fill in the gap. New Star Wars stories could explore the final fate of Luke, Han, and Leia in Legends and explore their family lines leading up to Legacy. An updated reference book summarizing the timeline after Crucible would also be welcome.

2 Dawn Of The Jedi

A short-lived era of the EU

James Mangold’s “Dawn of the Jedi” movie will kick off a new era in canon that only had a short time to thrive in Legends. Star Wars: Dawn of the Jedi by John Ostrander and Jan Duursema ended after 15 issues in 2014 and received one tie-in novel, Star Wars: Dawn of the Jedi – Into the Void, in 2013. Marked by stunning artwork, exceptional worldbuilding, and the introduction of the early Je’Daii Order, this era of Legends deserved more stories. Bringing back the original Dawn of the Jedi would be an intriguing way to build hype for the upcoming film.

1 1313

A gritty Boba Fett game in the Coruscant underworld

Star Wars: 1313 is the most logical canceled Legends project to bring back. The game would have allowed players to take control of Boba Fett and navigate the dangerous criminal underworld on Coruscant Level 1313. Like many other Star Wars titles, 1313 was canceled when Disney closed down LucasArts in 2013, but the game still has potential. The story of 1313 would be easy to rework for the current Star Wars canon, making it a perfect opportunity for Lucasfilm Games. Whether Star Wars will return to Legends remains to be seen, but stories like this deserve to be finished.
