Star Trek’s Tawny Newsome Says 1 Strange New Worlds Star Is “F-ing Hilarious”

Star Trek: Lower Decks‘ Tawny Newsome praises the comedic chops of the Star Trek: Strange New Worlds cast, singling out one particular actor as “f***ing hilarious.” Newsome and Jack Quaid played their Lower Decks Ensigns, Beckett Mariner and Bradward Boimler, in live-action in Strange New Worlds‘ crossover episode with Star Trek: Lower Decks, which was directed by Jonathan Frakes. Between them, Tawny and Jack got to interact with most of the crew of Captain Christopher Pike’s (Anson Mount) USS Enterprise, and the actors became good friends off-screen as well.

In an interview with Inverse, Tawny Newsome discussed how she felt the cast of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds was actually funnier than she is, despite being known as dramatic actors. Newsome singled out Christina Chong, who plays Lt. La’an Noonien-Singh and, indeed, had one of the funniest one-liners in Strange New Worlds‘ crossover: “I love grapplers.” Check out Newsome’s quote below:

I was like, you guys are the funny ones. We’re just trying to keep up. Chrissy Chong is f***ing hilarious. I was like, girl, you need to be doing comedy.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds’ Cast Is Adept At Comedy And Drama

Strange New Worlds’ versatility in genre-hopping is due to its talented cast.

Tawny Newsome’s assessment of the Star Trek: Strange New Worlds cast’s talents bears out how versatile they have proven to be. In just two seasons, Strange New Worlds has adeptly handled drama and comedy with equal skill. Strange New Worlds‘ crossover was a pure comedy, but so were a pair of Vulcan-centric episodes about Lt. Spock (Ethan Peck) and T’Pring (Gia Sandhu) in Strange New Worlds seasons 1 and 2. The episodic format of Strange New Worlds and the cast and writing staff’s ability to smoothly shift between genres are big reasons why the show is so enjoyable.

Strange New Worlds‘ cast is so talented that they were able to brilliantly tackle Star Trek‘s first-ever musical, which especially showcased the singing talents of Christina Chong, Celia Rose Gooding, and Rebecca Romijn. However, it’s hardly a secret now that Strange New Worlds’ actors are very funny, individually and when they are bouncing off each other. Hopefully, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 3 will lean into the cast’s comedic talents even further, and they have the endorsement of Tawny Newsome, who knows a lot about comedy herself.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds and Star Trek: Lower Decks are available to stream on Paramount+.
