Star Trek: Voyager’s Doctor’s Prodigy Season 2 Role Is Like Janeway, Hints EP

Star Trek: Voyager’s Doctor’s Prodigy Season 2 Role Is Like Janeway, Hints EP

The Doctor’s (Robert Picardo) role in Star Trek: Prodigy season 2 will be similar to how Hologram/Admiral Kathryn Janeway (Kate Mulgrew) functioned as the mentor of the USS Protostar’s young crew, teases executive producer Aaron J. Waltke. Star Trek: Prodigy dropped 4 minutes of season 2 footage at STLV: 57-Year Mission, revealing the return of Star Trek: Voyager’s holographic Doctor as well as unveiling Prodigy season 2’s new hero ship, the USS Voyager-A.

TrekMovie.com interviewed Star Trek: Prodigy executive producer Aaron J. Waltke at the #SaveStarTrekProdigy aerial banner event in Hollywood, and Waltke gave more insight into how The Doctor will step into the role of mentor to Dal R’El (Brett Gray) and his friends in Star Trek: Prodigy season 2 the way Janeway did in season 1. Check out the quotes below:

TrekMovie: Is the implication that Admiral Janeway will be busy with admiral stuff and so The Doctor will be overseeing the kids as a recurring character?

Aaron J. Waltke: Yes, as I’ve said elsewhere, when we bring a legacy character onto Star Trek, it’s not just for pure nostalgia or a fun “Hey, look at that guy.” Because of both financially and because of how our story unfolds, we want their relationship to be an integral part of both our young cadets’ journey and hopefully have an influence on those characters’ story as we get this sort of coda to what happened after Voyager returned to Earth. So Picardo as The Doctor is in it for the long haul. And he certainly has his fair share of teaching young people about how the warp core of the cell works. I think he fancies himself as something of a mentor to them, even if they still don’t quite know what to make of him.

How The USS Voyager-A Factors Into Star Trek: Prodigy Season 2

Aaron J. Waltke also revealed a bit more about what the new USS Voyager-A can do in Star Trek: Prodigy season 2. The new Lamarr Class Voyager-A is a more powerful starship that Admiral Janeway will command on her mission to rescue Captain Chakotay (Robert Beltran), who is trapped on Solum in an alternate 25th-century timeline. Waltke tells TrekMovie:

Well as you know, the Voyager-A has arrived and, as I’ve hinted elsewhere, it is fully equipped with all sorts of technology that Voyager brought back from its travels in the Delta Quadrant and beyond. We’ve already seen a little taste of a limited sort of tandem quantum slipstream. I think there are other elements that you’ve seen shall we say on the Enterprise-D, or heard about it, and on the Cerritos, that will also be on the show.

Voyager-A’s capabilities seem to tie into Aaron J. Waltke’s previous indications that Star Trek: Prodigy season 2 will nod to and honor every generation and incarnation of Star Trek. Hopefully, there will be good news soon that Star Trek: Prodigy has found a new streaming home, so its devoted fans can see the Doctor and the Voyager-A in action.
