Star Trek: Picard’s Spinoff Can Happen “If Fans Still Want” Legacy, Says Michelle Hurd

Star Trek: Picard‘s Michelle Hurd has hope for Star Trek: Legacy, and suggests it could still happen. A nostalgic tour-de-force, Picard season 3 reunited the cast of Star Trek: The Next Generation aboard the rebuilt USS Enterprise-D. While the season may have wrapped up the story of the TNG crew, Picard season 3’s final episode provided the perfect setup for a spinoff. With the newly promoted Captain Seven of Nine (Jeri Ryan) at the helm of the rechristened USS Enterprise-G and Hurd’s Commander Raffi Musiker as her first officer, plus potential storylines for Jack Crusher (Ed Speleers) and Sidney La Forge (Ashlei Sharpe Chestnut), the stage has been set for what’s been dubbed as Star Trek: Legacy by showrunner Terry Matalas.

Despite the excellent setup and enthusiasm from fans and the talent in front of and behind the camera, a new series continuing the stories of Star Trek: Picard season 3’s characters lost some of its momentum due to 2023’s WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes. There has been no news of the highly-anticipated Star Trek: Picard spinoff as Paramount+ is currently focusing on other Star Trek projects. Michelle Hurd spoke with TV Insider and revealed her hopes for Commander Raffi’s future and Star Trek: Legacy. Read her quote below:

I love Raffi. She’s my favorite character. We have hands, fingers, everything’s crossed for Star Trek: Legacy. I know that right now they’re working on Section 31 for Michelle Yeoh. And then they’re going to do Starfleet Academy. That’s going to be a series. And then if the fans still want it, they’ll start working on Star Trek: Legacy.

Star Trek Cast Members And Fans Alike Still Want Star Trek: Legacy

Todd Stashwick (who portrays the fan-favorite Captain Liam Shaw) has taken to social media to express his enthusiasm for Legacy, even though his character was killed in Picard season 3. Star Trek legend Jonathan Frakes (Captain Willaim Riker) has also stated that he sees the Picard spin-off as a great opportunity to carry on the legacy of Star Trek: The Next Generation. Ed Speleers, too, has said that he would eagerly return as Ensign Jack Crusher, the son of Admiral Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart) and Dr. Beverly Crusher (Gates McFadden).

Fans have also taken to social media to campaign for Star Trek: Legacy, and many of Star Trek’s official posts garner tons of comments requesting the show. Even nearly a year after the premiere of Star Trek: Picard season 3, cast members and fans continue to speculate about Legacy and express their hopes for it. With most of the cast members on board and fans’ excitement refusing to wane, it seems a shame not to continue the story that began in Star Trek: Picard, especially when the adventures of the USS Enterprise-G were just getting started.
