Star Trek: Picard Season 2 Had A Deep-Cut Voyager Easter Egg

Star Trek: Picard Season 2 Had A Deep-Cut Voyager Easter Egg

Production designer Dave Blass has revealed that Star Trek: Picard season 2 contains a deep-cut Star Trek: Voyager easter egg. Given that Seven of Nine (Jeri Ryan) is in the cast of Star Trek: Picard, references to Voyager should be expected. Voyager references in Star Trek: Picard can be as obvious as a name check for Admiral Kathryn Janeway (Kate Mulgrew), or a familiar looking prop on-set. Production designer Dave Blass revealed in a recent interview that he and his team had fun including a deep-cut nod to Voyager episodes on the sets of Picard season 2.

Speaking to Warp Factor Trek, Dave Blass discussed how he and his team approached set design for two seasons of Star Trek: Picard. Interestingly, Blass refers to Picard as a “historical” show, meaning that the so-called easter eggs included in the set design reflect the legacy of Star Trek: The Next Generation. On this subject, Dave Blass also revealed that he included a deep-cut reference to Sarah Silverman’s character in the Star Trek: Voyager time travel episode “Future’s End”. Why Star Trek: Picard Production Designer Dave Blass Doesn’t Like Easter Eggs

“It’s about world building”

Although Dave Blass admits that Sarah Silverman’s snow globe from Star Trek: Voyager is an “easter-eggy thing“, the Star Trek: Picard production designer doesn’t like the term, as he explained to Warp Factor Trek:

Star Trek easter eggs can, therefore, become a distraction from the rich world that Star Trek: Picard production designer Dave Blass and his team create. Serious thought is put into the placing of items like the Ressikan flute owned by Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart). The Star Trek: The Next Generation episode “The Inner Light” was a profoundly important episode for Jean-Luc, so, of course, Picard would have continued to keep the flute in his study after he left the USS Enterprise. It’s not an empty piece of fan service, it’s a decision that fits with the character and his journey.

The care and attention shown to the world of Star Trek: Picard by Dave Blass and the team ensured that there was a continuity to the Star Trek: The Next Generation spinoff. The set design and the nods to the past helped to reflect the changes that the TNG crew experienced as they grew older. Rather than being empty fan-serving “easter eggs”, these nods to the past added another level to Star Trek: Picard‘s emotionally rewarding finale.
