Star Trek Gives a Hilarious Shout-Out to Spock’s Sex Symbol Status

Warning: contains spoilers for Star Trek: The Animated Celebration Presents The Scheimer Barrier #2! Star Trek just gave a humorous shout-out to Mister Spock’s sex symbol status. In IDW Publishing’s new Star Trek: The Animated Celebration Presents The Scheimer Barrier #2, Captain Kirk and an away team are ripped from their reality and whisked away to new dimensions. While on a world patterned after Archie’s hangout of Riverdale, Star Trek takes the opportunity to remind fans Spock is a science fiction sex symbol.

Star Trek: The Animated Celebration Presents The Scheimer Barrier #2 is written by Casper Kelly and drawn by Jonathan Case. Spock, Uhura, and M’Ress have accompanied “Bessie” (a Betty pastiche) to a pool party, where she hopes to impress “Artie” with her new bikini. However, “Verona” upstages her, which greatly upsets Bessie. Spock and company try to convince her to break up with Artie, and they seem to get through to her. However, Bessie quickly develops a crush on Spock, telling the Vulcan he is the one she wants, and that his “logic is so dreamy.” Almost on cue, Verona saunters up to Spock, asking Bessie to introduce them.

Mister Spock Is a Star Trek Sex Symbol

Star Trek Gives a Hilarious Shout-Out to Spock’s Sex Symbol Status

Mister Spock is synonymous with Star Trek and is easily one of its most recognizable characters. The Enterprise’s science officer, Spock is half-human, half-Vulcan, which makes him an outsider in both cultures. Despite this, or perhaps exactly because of this, Spock has become something of a sex symbol among fans. In the Original Series, as well as Strange New Worlds, Nurse Chapel had unrequited feelings for Spock. She continually tried to win his heart to no avail. Spock was betrothed at one point, to a Vulcan woman named T’Pring, but the relationship fell apart. Spock is continually off-limits to romantic partners, which has made him irresistible.

Spock Has Undeniable Sex Appeal

And now, in a Riverdale stand-in, the franchise has once again reminded fans of Spock’s sex appeal. After Spock helps Bessie break her obsession with Artie, she turns her attention to him, snuggling up to the Vulcan. Spock, too old for Bessie, is aghast. If that was not enough, Verona decides she wants to date Spock too, although this may be simply because Bessie is interested. Both of these women are ready to fight for Spock’s affections, unaware that he will turn them away every time. Bessie and Verona would have learned what Chapel came to realize: Spock is unattainable.

Star Trek continues to play around with Spock’s status as a sex symbol: Strange New Worlds further explores his relationships with T’Pring and Chapel. Now, his Vulcan swagger is getting a hilarious call-out. The sight of the Betty and Veronica pastiches hitting on Spock is funny, even if he is not interested. His lack of interest in romantic partners has only added fuel to the fire and made him even more irresistible. Spock is a Star Trek sex symbol, and that isn’t changing anytime soon.
