Star Trek gets a loving homage in the new episode of Son of a Critch! Created by Mark Critch and based on his life story of coming of age in the 1980s, Son of a Critch stars Mark Critch as his father, Mike, and Benjamin Evan Ainsworth as young Mark. Rounding out Son of a Critch‘s cast are Claire Rankin as Mark’s mother Mary, Sophia Powers as Fox, and Mark Rivera as Ritchie, who play young Mark’s friends, and Colton Gobbo, who plays Mark’s older brother, Mike Jr. Malcolm McDowell, who has his own notable connection to Star Trek, also stars as Patrick “Pop” Critch. Son of a Critch airs on CBC in Canada and on CW in the United States.

Son of a Critch season 3, episode 2, “Reach for the Top,” continues the series’ trademark of fanciful dream sequences with a spot-on homage to the classic Star Trek: The Original Series. As Mark Critch explains in Screen Rant’s exclusive behind-the-scenes video, he grew up as a huge fan of Star Trek. Working with Paramount, production designer Mark Steel, who worked on Star Trek: Discovery, recreated the original USS Enterprise’s bridge, including Captain James T. Kirk’s iconic captain’s chair.
