Star Trek Fleet Command Trailer Unites Karl Urban & Sonequa Martin-Green

A new trailer for Star Trek Fleet Command has given fans of the sci-fi franchise the first crossover between the movie and television series, bringing Karl Urban and Sonequa Martin-Green together. The game, which is set in the alternate Kelvin timeline of the rebooted Star Trek films, allows players to use characters from across the entire franchise. This includes classic characters such as Kirk and Spock as well as figures from the Star Trek Discovery TV series.

Star Trek Fleet Command first launched in 2018 as a mobile game for Android and iOS. It is a strategy title that sees players take control of a ship and space station, giving them the ability to explore various galactic systems and complete missions for NPCs. It also has an MMO element, allowing users to interact with other players in a limited way. Fans can upgrade their space station and purchase new ships from the Star Trek franchise. Since its release, the game has become incredibly popular, receiving positive reviews from critics and bringing in record-breaking revenue for developer Scopely.

Karl Urban and Sonequa Martin-Green, who play Leonard McCoy and Michael Burnham respectively in the Star Trek universe, have appeared together in a series of trailers for the mobile game that Scopely has released. The official Star Trek Fleet Command YouTube page hosts four advertisements featuring the pair squaring off in a series of battles. The two actors heavily reference the characters that they portray and make jokes at each other’s expense throughout the videos, although viewers looking to see any real gameplay will be disappointed.

While Star Trek Fleet Command is not the only recent game based on the hit series, with Ubisoft’s virtual reality game Star Trek: Bridge Crew launching in 2017, it has certainly been the most successful. It joined a growing library of mobile titles that have been incredibly successful over the last five years, such as Pokémon GO. Niantic’s augmented reality game recorded over $1 billion in revenue in 2020, bringing the total to more than $4 billion across its life.

Given the success of Star Trek Fleet Command, it makes sense that Scopely is trying to expand its audience even further. With content from Star Trek Discovery now available in the game, it allows the developer to use crossovers like this to promote the mobile title, especially with hype building for season 4 of the television series.
