Star-Lord’s Ultimate Form Just Turned Him into the New Ego

Star-Lord’s Ultimate Form Just Turned Him into the New Ego

Warning: Contains spoilers for Guardians of the Galaxy #6!Star-Lord is following his MCU father Ego‘s footsteps with his newest ultimate form. The MCU took a bold change in direction to Peter Quill’s lineage when it was revealed in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 that Ego the Living Planet was his dad, not J’Son of Spartax like in the comics. While Peter and Ego aren’t related in the comics, this hasn’t stopped Marvel from finding ways to connect the two as part of its cosmic universe. Now, Star-Lord has taken on a new form, and it could very well rival Ego himself with the power he has.

In Guardians of the Galaxy #6 by Colin Kelly, Jackson Lanzing and Alex Lins, the Guardians have been consumed by Groot’s terrifying and villainous Grootfall form as they recall the mission that turned him to the dark side. Each member blames themselves for losing their friend, but in death they come together as Groot finally kills them. However, their found family dynamic creates “a fire” that ultimately creates a new Groot comet. However, unlike the others, its face resembles Star-Lord’s mask, hinting that the team has been reborn as a new cosmic entity with Star-Lord leading the way.

Star-Lord and the Guardians Just Leveled Up in Power

Star-Lord’s Ultimate Form Just Turned Him into the New Ego

By giving up their physical bodies and becoming a Groot comet, Star-Lord and his team have become something more. Just like Ego, they have become a sentient cosmic entity that can traverse the universe with unimaginable power. Fans have gotten a glimpse at just how strong they can be based on the destruction caused by Groot comets throughout the new Guardians of the Galaxy series’ run. However, it’s unlikely that they’ll be adding to Grootfall. The fact that they have recreated Star-Lord’s iconic mask in their new form shows that they have control over it, so they can channel Groot’s powers as they travel the stars.

Groot’s Villain Days May Be Numbered

Guardians Grootfall

The most telling thing about the Guardians’ rebirth is how it could bring an end to Grootfall once and for all. Throughout the series’ first six issues, the Guardians have been at odds trying to help others escape Grootfall and unsuccessfully trying to bring Groot back. Every time they’ve failed in some way because their former friend is just too strong and envelops everything he touches. However, the tables have turned. They’ve officially reunited as a team and taken a new form that’s on par with Groot. They may not have been able to destroy him before, but now that they have control over a part of him, they could turn the tides.

There will be others that try to stop Grootfall such as Hulkling and Wiccan in the upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy #7, but the Guardians have officially become the universe’s last hope. Groot’s new form is everywhere throughout the galaxy, and trying to topple a cosmic force will take more than brute strength from a hero or two to stop it. This is why the Guardians’ reincarnation is so important. Their sacrifice that paved the way “for something new to grow” has opened the doorway to fight Groot on his level. Star-Lord and his friend’s new form has brought the fight to a grand cosmic scale, and it will take this new Ego-like form to stop Groot as they give him a taste of the destruction he’s been causing.
