Squirrel Girl Podcast Promises the Definitive Take on Cult-Favorite Hero

The fan-favorite Squirrel Girl has conquered the comic book realm, so now she’s heading to take on a whole new medium. Marvel has announced Squirrel Girl: The Unbeatable Radio Show!, a six-episode podcast written by Unbeatable Squirrel Girl’s Ryan North. The new, audio-based story looks to be yet another unique outing for the quirky hero.

Doreen Green, aka Squirrel Girl, is a hero with superhuman abilities, a prehensile tail, and a telepathic connection to squirrels. Created by Will Murray and Steve Ditko, the character first appeared in Marvel Super-Heroes #8 and made sporadic appearances until she was featured as a member of the Great Lakes Avengers in GLA: Disassembled. She’s since become a hit among fans for her chipper attitude and her ability to take on powerful foes such as Dr. Doom and Thanos. An evil clone of Squirrel Girl even managed to defeat every single Marvel hero.

Her most beloved series, The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl by Ryan North and Erica Henderson, is now getting a sequel in podcast form. Marvel Entertainment and SiriusXM have created Squirrel Girl: The Unbeatable Radio Show!, a six-episode series that follows Empire State University student Doreen Green hosting a call-in show for her college’s radio station. Having been outed as the notorious rodent-themed hero, Green uses the program to bridge her college and superhero lives. However, trouble begins to brew when a mysterious caller begins a wave of crime across New York,  forcing Doreen to pull double duty as a radio host and the Unbeatable Squirrel Girl. To entice fans, Marvel released a trailer narrated by Milana Vayntrub, who stars as the eponymous hero. Interested fans can read a special tie-in issue that serves as a prequel to the podcast exclusively on the Marvel Unlimited app.

Milana Vayntrub’s casting is notable because she had been previously cast as Squirrel Girl in a pilot for a New Warriors television series intended for the FreeForm channel. However, the show was canceled and the only glimpse fans ever got of a live-action Squirrel Girl was leaked photos of Vayntrub in costume. However, Vayntrub did go on to voice Doreen Green in several Marvel Rising animated shorts. Her return to the character for the podcast is surely a welcome one. Squirrel Girl: The Unbeatable Radio Show! is also a nice treat for fans of the Ryan North and Erica Henderson’s series. The comic ran for nearly five years with two volumes and consisted of nearly sixty issues. The humor and slice-of-life storytelling made for a unique superhero comic that anyone could enjoy. Some have even called Squirrel Girl the next Deadpool for how funny and meta her adventures often get. Marvel emphasized that the podcast is a sequel that continues the comic’s storyline but that it was “also built for new people who maybe have never encountered the world of the Unbeatable Squirrel Girl before”.

Squirrel Girl definitely has her fans and fills a unique niche in the Marvel Universe, so it only makes sense to give her her own podcast adventure.  Vayntrub’s return to the roll of Doreen is the cherry on top. Despite the ending of her series, it’s evident that the future is still quite bright for the unbeatable Squirrel Girl.

Squirrel Girl: The Unbeatable Radio Show! is available right now on podcast platforms everywhere.
