Warning! Contains spoilers for Spy x Family chapter 66!The Forger family is the heart and soul of Spy x Family, but the manga’s latest chapter is introducing threats that may force them apart. These threats come after a long period in which the plot didn’t progress very far (despite featuring a very important flashback into Loid’s past). So they are potentially a sign that the series is about to finally have some major new plot developments.
Spy x Family has always brilliantly toed the line between being an espionage thriller and a slice-of-life comedy. The manga’s main focus has always been its central “fake” family, the Forgers, as they both constantly attempt to hide their true identities from each other and grow closer together. As an assassin working for the government, if family matriarch Yor ever found out that her husband Loid was actually an enemy spy, she may be forced to kill him. But the latest chapter of the series may bring its finely balanced pack of lies one step closer to the light of day.
In chapter 66, Yor is befriended by Melinda Desmond, the wife of the politician Loid is trying to get close to. Learning this, he encourages Yor to continue this relationship, viewing it as another potential Avenue to his target. This causes Anya to worry that he will abandon her for not being able to carry out his initial plan of getting to Desmond through his son, causing her to view herself in direct competition with her fake mother. While this is a fun new source of conflict in Spy X Family’s normally supportive Forger family, this new relationship may not be exactly what it seems, as Melinda is seen with an intense yet unreadable expression when Yor brings up Anya punching her son. So this friendship could be a ploy to get some sort of revenge. To make matters even worse, Yor mentions offhand to her handler the Gardener that Loid seemingly supports the National Unity Party that Desmond is a part of, a fact that seems to displease and surprise him. Given this displeasure, it seems like the Gardener will be investigating Loid’s background and beliefs further in the near future.
All of these new developments threaten the current precarious stability of Spy X Family’s Forger family. The pressure that Anya now feels to outdo her mother could potentially build tension and ill will between the two. Melinda’s ulterior motives could cause her to attempt and harm Yor and her family in some way as revenge for her son’s injury. This could in turn jeopardize Loid’s mission or cause Yor to think she is failing in her role as a mother and wife. But most threatening is the Gardener’s new interest in Loid. If he uncovers Loid’s deception or tries to assassinate him (potentially using Yor), the entire facade of the Forger Family could crumble.
This would be an incredible tragedy, as it is heartwarming how close the Forgers have grown despite their secrets and clearly love and care for each other. It remains to be seen if any of these threats will be the thing that exposes the family as a lie, but just the threat of this is incredibly worrying for fans who have grown to love the Forgers. If any of these new developments do tear the Forgers apart, it will be absolutely devastating as they are the heartwarming core of Spy x Family.
