Spotify Pet Playlists: How To Make A Music Playlist For Your Pet

Spotify has seemingly endless playlists for humans to listen to — but did you know it can also create playlists for your pets? Part of the reason for Spotify’s continued success is its treasure trove of features. Want to listen to podcasts and music in one app? Spotify lets you do that. Wonder what all of your streaming looked like throughout the year? Spotify Wrapped is the best in the business. Combined with endless tools for editing playlists, filtering music, and a whole lot more, the options for tweaking your listening experience are fantastic.

On top of all that, one Spotify feature you may not be aware of is something called ‘Spotify for Pets’ — a feature that lets Spotify users create playlists for their furry friends. Launched in January 2020, Spotify said it, “dug our paws into the subject and conducted a study on how pet owners use music with their pets. We found that 71% of pet owners surveyed play music for their pets.” Lots of pet owners think that music can keep animals company, relieve stress, and keep them happy/entertained. If you want to play music for your pet too but aren’t sure what songs they might like, that’s where Spotify’s pet playlists come in.

To start making a Spotify pet playlist, you have to visit the Pet Playlists website on your phone or computer and click the ‘Let’s Go‘ button to log in with your Spotify account. Once you’re in, Spotify asks you to pick your pet. You can choose a dog, cat, bird, hamster, or iguana. Choose the pet you have, click ‘Next,’ and then drag the slider on the next page to indicate your pet’s energy level. Move the slider to the left if your pet is relaxed, move it to the right if it’s super energetic, or place the slider anywhere in the middle to best match your pet’s personality.

Clicking ‘Next‘ takes you to another slider — this time asking you if your pet is shy or friendly. Move the slider all the way to the left if your pet is extremely shy, to the right if it’s friendly, or anywhere in between. Click ‘Next‘ once more to get to the final slider, where you’ll indicate if your pet is more apathetic or curious. Click ‘Next‘ again, click ‘Your Pet’s Name‘ to enter its name, and then click the ‘+’ icon if you want to add a picture of your pet.

When clicking ‘Next‘ this final time, you’ll need to wait a couple of seconds while Spotify syncs your pet’s personality with your music tastes. When that’s complete, the page updates with your pet’s personalized playlist. Click one of the social media icons towards the bottom of the screen to share it on social media, or click ‘Listen Now‘ to start listening to the playlist on Spotify. The best part? Spotify pet playlists are available to Free and Premium users alike.

Spotify’s pet playlists are based on two factors – the attributes you entered for your pet, and your listening habits. Spotify consulted with David Teie, a cellist with the National Symphony Orchestra in the United States. Teie is somewhat of an expert in creating music for animals, and has composed different songs for a variety of animal species, including monkeys, dogs, and cats.

For Spotify, Teie was able to provide insights into the likes and dislikes of different animals. For example, he noted that dogs don’t like music in the lower register and may perceive this as a threat. Using these attributes, Spotify creates a playlist tailored specifically to your pet cat, dog, bird, hamster, or iguana, and includes songs you’ve listened to that match that criteria.
