Spiral 2: What To Expect

Spiral 2: What To Expect

Spiral: From the Book of Saw gave fans of the long-running franchise a new take on an old classic— so what can they expect from Spiral 2? Spiral received mixed reviews from critics, though most noted the film’s potential to rejuvenate the Saw franchise — an IP most horror buffs had accepted was complete. Originally intended as a soft reboot, Spiral brought fans back to the world of Saw with a new twist. Instead of the iconic Jigsaw, Spiral followed Detective Zeke Banks (Chris Rock) and his rookie partner Will Schenk (Max Minghella) as they tried to solve a string of gruesome murders committed by a Jigsaw copycat determined to wipe the corruption out of the police force through murder. Samuel L. Jackson plays Banks’ retired police chief father, Marcus Banks, who steps in to help solve the case.

Spiral also saw the return of director Darren Lynn Bousman, who has previously directed Saw II- Saw IV. After a failed attempt to reboot the series with 2017’s Jigsaw, fans were tentative to accept another attempt. However, Spiral proceeded to give audiences a fresh take on the Saw franchise, providing a new and intriguing story that will surely carry over with Spiral 2. With a star-studded cast and a unique approach to what made the original Saw movie iconic, Spiral ended on many sequel-inspiring notes. Here’s everything known about Spiral 2 so far.

Will Spiral 2 Happen?

Spiral 2: What To Expect

The chances for a Spiral 2 are pretty high. Saw 10 has been listed as in development, though no official announcement has been made on the film so far. Spiral screenwriter Josh Stolberg left a cryptic Tweet, saying that there is a script in the works and that fans of John Kramer will be happy. In a recent interview, star and producer Chris Rock hinted that he’d be open to a Spiral sequel, but that the fate of a sequel would rely on how well the first was received. Rock did say the film is “open” to a sequel, and that “another one wouldn’t be out of the question.” With mixed reviews from critics and mostly positive reviews from fans, as well as a fairly low budget as is usual for horror films, Spiral 2 is pretty likely to happen.

Spiral 2 Story Details

Chris Rock as Ezekiel

The end of Spiral leaves a lot of room for future story possibilities. With Will escaping unscathed at the end of the film, one likely sequel could follow Zeke Banks in his quest to take down the man responsible for his father’s death. In an interview with Esquire, Director Darren Lynn Bousman also teased the possibility that there are more institutions out there to take on in Spiral sequels, including churches and Big Pharma. This setup opens up the potential for a cat-and-mouse game between Will and Zeke as Will makes his way through various corrupt institutions delivering his version of justice.

Spiral 2 Cast

Spiral 2 would likely see returning cast members. With Will surviving the first movie, it’s likely that Max Minghella would return to reprise his role as the franchise’s new villain. Chris Rock has already confirmed he would be interested in a sequel, meaning his return for Spiral 2 is a pretty fair bet. The Saw franchise is known for jumping through time and bringing actors back in flashbacks, so seeing actor Samuel L. Jackson return despite his death in Spiral wouldn’t be a long shot.

Spiral 2 Release Date

Spiral: From the Book of Saw had its U.S. theatrical release on May 14, 2021. The original Saw films released a year apart, meaning some fans had hoped to be seeing Spiral 2 by May 2022 if the reboots followed the old formula. However, as of late 2022 there still isn’t a Spiral 2 confirmed. Covid delays aside, the first Spiral arrived within around 18 months of its announcement, so fans shouldn’t have too long to wait once Spiral 2 enters production.

Spiral And Saw Will Coexist

With Saw 10 and Tobin Bell’s return as Jigsaw on the way, many are wondering when Spiral 2 will make its big debut. Spiral managed to take the dying franchise in a whole new direction, and has gone from soft reboot to fully fledged spinoff. With a new Jigsaw copycat, Spiral has opened up a world of possibilities to exist alongside the new Saw movie. The Saw franchise itself has experienced some great high points and some incredibly low ones too. While Saw VI is a fan favorite, Saw IV and onward weren’t the most well-received films, with many critiquing the re-hashed storylines and poor acting. While Jigsaw fell into these same traps, Spiral most assuredly didn’t. Despite some almost franchise-ending flops, especially during the 2010s, the Saw IP has stood the test of time and promises to be even bigger going into the 2020s — and the Spiral spin-off is definitely helping with the renewed interest. Therefore, with Saw 10 officially on the horizon, it’s likely that news about the Spiral: From the Book of Saw sequel, Spiral 2, will be out shortly.
