Spinning Out Season 2: Cancelation, Renewal Chances & Everything We Know

Spinning Out Season 2: Cancelation, Renewal Chances & Everything We Know

Spinning Out season 2 never arrived on Netflix, as the streamer canceled the Kaya Scoldario-led ice skating drama barely a month after it debuted. Release and canceled in 2020, Spinning Out was created by Samantha Stratton and starred Scoldario as young ice skater Kat. Kat’s Olympic aspirations, bipolar disorder, pressure from mother Carol (January Jones), and an injury that nearly derails her career send Kat on a spiraling path toward unraveling.

Spinning Out ended on a cliffhanger, meaning many Netflix subscribers both hoped for and expected a season 2. Kat and Justin (Evan Roderick) had just entered sectionals, Kat learned that Serena (Willow Shields) hadn’t been sexually assaulted by coach Mitch (Will Kemp), and the true culprit Dr. Ethan Parker (Charlie Hewson) had been bludgeoned to death by Carol. However, despite this ending more than justifying a follow-up, Spinning Out season 2 wasn’t renewed by Netflix.

Spinning Out Has Been Canceled

Spinning Out Season 2: Cancelation, Renewal Chances & Everything We Know

Spinning Out arrived on Netflix in January 2020, and the streamer announced they wouldn’t be renewing the Kaya Scoldario-led ice skating drama for season 2 on February 3 the same year (via Deadline). The decision to cancel Spinning Out was a shock, as multiple fan campaigns to renew the show for another season gained notable groundswell. Sadly none were successful, and Spinning Out became one of many canceled Netflix shows that ended on a massive cliffhanger.

Why Was Spinning Out Canceled

Spinning Out was canceled because of low viewership figures during its first season. However, the way that Netflix assessed viewer data and made decisions at the time was slightly different from how the streamer approaches renewals in 2023. At the time Spinning Out was canceled in 2020, Netflix made the decision based on the first month of viewership data.

While the Netflix renewal policy has become slightly more forgiving since then, especially in the wake of controversial decisions like ending Warrior Nun, the streamer is still somewhat synonymous with early cancelations. The decision to end Spinning Out after only a month isn’t directly responsible for this reputation, but it definitely contributed to it.

What Would The Spinning Out Season 2 Story Have Been?

The Spinning Out season 2 story was never revealed by Netflix or creator Samantha Stratton. However, the finale of the first season left some unanswered questions that season 2 of Spinning Out would have to address.

One of the most important points the Spinning Out season 2 story needed to address was Carol murdering Dr. Parker in the season 1 finale. It was revealed that Dr. Parker had been abusing Serena, and instead of going to the police like older sister Kat insisted, Carol took things into her own hands. Season 1 ended just as Dr. Parker met his fate at the end of Carol’s baseball bat — and this cliffhanger more than justified another season of Spinning Out from a narrative perspective.

There’s also the question of Spinning Out’s Kat and Justin’s Olympic figure-skating dreams. The pair ended the first season having entered sectionals, but it was never revealed how they did in the competition or whether they were through to the next stage. Kat’s ongoing struggles with her mental health were also far from resolved by the end of season 1, so the Spinning Out season 2 plot would have had to continue exploring the impact of Kat’s athletic aspiration on her emotional well-being.

Could Spinning Out Still Have A Season Two?

While it’s not impossible, the chances that Spinning Out season 2 will happen are slim. No other networks or streaming platforms have made a move to pick up the show and renew it for a second season. Since Spinning Out was canceled in 2020, almost four years ago, there’s been plenty of time an opportunity for Spinning Out to find a new home.

It would have to take a significant amount of fan campaigning to make a new season of Spinning Out possible. Given that many current shows have experienced non-renewals in the wake of the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes, a single-season canceled property from 2020 like Spinning Out doesn’t look like it would be considered for renewal any time soon. While Spinning Out season 2 could technically happen, it almost certainly won’t.
