Spinning Gold Sees Record Execs Fight Over Johnny Carson & Donna Summer

Screen Rant is thrilled to present a new clip from the upcoming film Spinning Gold, which is slated to release at the end of March. The biopic is centered around the life of the music executive Neil Bogart, who founded Casablanca Records. Spinning Gold stars Tony-nominee Jeremy Jordan as Bogart alongside cast members like Mission: Impossible‘s Michelle Monaghan, SNL‘s Jay Pharoah, and Harry Potter‘s Jason Issacs.

Spinning Gold has long been a passion project for Timothy Scott Bogart, Neil’s son, who first started on the film over a decade ago. When the project first began, it was rumored Spike Lee may direct Spinning Gold, which at the time was set to star Justin Timberlake. However, as time went on the project evolved, with Bogart assuming the directorial role and Jordan replacing Timberlake. The movie will follow Neil Bogart’s journey to making Casablanca the most successful independent record company of all time, with the label signing artists like KISS, Donna Summer, and The Village People.

More About Spinning Gold

Spinning Gold Sees Record Execs Fight Over Johnny Carson & Donna Summer

Screen Rant’s exclusive clip centers around an argument between Neil and Cecil Holmes – played by Jay Pharoah – his best friend and business partner. Their fight centers around Johnny Carson, undercut by the fact that Casablanca Records is hemorrhaging money betting on artists who have at that point remained unsuccessful like KISS and Donna Summer. Holmes tells Bogart they were wrong about their previous artistic choices, which he counters by saying they aren’t, they just “haven’t figured out a way to finally be right.”

While many biopics like Bohemian Rhapsody make the mistake of not delving into a famous figure’s darker side, this does not seem to be the case with Spinning Gold. Although the entire film is narrated by Bogart’s character as he sits in a room of gold records demonstrating his great eventual success, the movie will also show the terrible lows that had to come first and the toll they have on Bogart and his relationships; this scene is a great example of one of those instances. It’s important for a biopic to show these struggles in order for victories to feel more earned and worthwhile, and also help them stay truer to real life. Luckily, with Timothy Bogart at the helm, Spinning Gold is sure to be a labor of love.

Spinning Gold releases in theaters on March 31.
