Spider-Verse Meme Nails Spider-Man 2099’s Most Ridiculous Plot Hole

Spider-Verse Meme Nails Spider-Man 2099’s Most Ridiculous Plot Hole

A Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse meme nails the problem with Spider-Man 2099 in the movie. Oscar Isaac made his debut as Miguel O’Hara, aka Spider-Man 2099, in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse‘s post-credits scene before eventually appearing in a major role in this year’s sequel, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse. While Miguel proved to be one of the movie’s high points, with fans excited to see him return in the delayed Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse, the character’s story was left with one big question.

On TikTok, @azirapapal shared a video that makes fun of an important part of Miguel’s story that was never addressed in Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse.

While it is shown in the Spider-Society’s HQ that there is a Spider-Man who is a therapist helping out the other Spider-Man variants to deal with their trauma, Miguel’s attitude in the movie hints heavily at Spider-Man 2099 never having talked with the therapist Spider-Man. The meme in question imagines how that session would go, with Miguel refusing to open up and Lyla snitching on him.

How Across The Spider-Verse’s Spider-Therapist Makes Spider-Man 2099’s Arc Way Sadder

Spider-Verse Meme Nails Spider-Man 2099’s Most Ridiculous Plot Hole

The presence of Spider-Therapist only makes Spider-Man 2099’s arc sadder. Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse revealed Miguel’s backstory. The hero traveled to an alternate universe where Miguel O’Hara was dead and left a family behind, choosing to stay there and adopt the deceased Spider-Man’s daughter as his own. However, by doing that, Spider-Man 2099 broke a canon event.

Due to Miguel’s decision, the entire universe where he lived with his daughter gets erased, with the hero desperately watching as she vanishes while clinging to him. As was seen in the movie, Miguel is shown as a very different person from the one he was during the flashback sequence, with Spider-Man 2099 having grown into a more serious and bitter individual after suffering such heartbreak.

The meme shows the irony in Miguel’s situation, as he is the leader of the Spider Society, a team that has a dedicated therapist Spider-Man to help others deal with trauma, but Miguel himself does not use Spider-Therapist services in his favor, as his attitude throughout the movie clearly indicates that Spider-Man 2099 has not properly processed his trauma. While Miguel might start as an antagonist to Miles in the final movie in the trilogy, Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse‘s ideal ending could include Miguel admitting his issues and taking the necessary steps toward a healthy grieving and recovery process that Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse showed he very clearly needs.
