Spider-Verse 2 Set In 6 Different Universes, Includes 240 Characters

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse will raise the bar from the first installment as Spider-Verse 2 will not only be set in six different universes, but it will feature 240 characters. 2018 marked a major year for the Spider-Man property as Sony took the web-slinger to new lengths through the world of animation. While Tom Holland continued to swing in live-action as MCU’s Peter Parker, Sony brought another member of the Spider-Family to life with Miles Morales. Not only did the fan-favorite hero get his cinematic debut, but it also brought Marvel’s Spider-Verse concept from panel to screen.

While Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse was primarily Miles’ story, the animated installment allowed the teen hero to learn that he is not alone as a web-slinger. With characters like Peter B. Parker, Spider-Gwen, Peni Parker, Spider-Man Noir, and Spider-Ham, Miles’ entry into heroism became a cinematic spectacular. Praised for its unique animation style, and storytelling, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse became a box office and critical success. The first film also won Best Animated Feature at the 91st Academy Awards, with Sony now continuing to commit to more Spider-Verse sequels, with Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse (Part One) on its way.

Originally planned to hit theaters on October 7, 2022, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse was recently delayed to June 2, 2023. Despite the extra eight months of waiting, the Spider-Verse creative team is making it worth audience’s time. At this year’s CinemaCon, the Sony presentation unveiled some new exciting details about the highly anticipated sequel. While it was already known that Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse would explore new realities, the sequel will officially be set in six different universes. It was also confirmed that Spider-Verse 2 will feature a total of 240 characters.

Shameik Moore, Hailee Steinfeld, Jake Johnson, and Oscar Isaac are all reprising their Spider-Verse characters as Miles, Spider-Gwen, Peter B. Parker, and Spider-Man 2099 respectively. For Spider-Man 2099, a.k.a. Miguel O’Hara, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse will further flesh out the futuristic web-crawler from a different dimension after making his debut in a post-credits scene. The hyped-up sequel is also set to bring another beloved female Spidey to life from the comics, with Issa Rae voicing Jessica Draw, better known to Marvel fans as Spider-Woman. Takuya Yamashiro, Japan’s Spider-Man, is also confirmed to make an appearance in some capacity, according to Spider-Verse producer and writer Phil Lord.

With 240 characters and a total of six confirmed universes, the Spider-Verse creators are not holding back. It’s likely safe to speculate that not all 240 characters will have major roles, with most of them potentially being in Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse as cameos. Despite stating there are six universes being explored, it wouldn’t be surprising if the number ends up being way higher by the time audiences go and see the sequel in theaters. With the endless potential of the Spider-Verse concept, Sony is truly taking advantage of the Spider-Man property as Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse is looking like it will potentially outdo its predecessor.
