Spider-Man’s Huge Mary Jane Twist Was Marvel’s Biggest Fake Out

Spider-Man’s Huge Mary Jane Twist Was Marvel’s Biggest Fake Out

Warning: SPOILERS for The Amazing Spider-Man #25Marvel Comics’ biggest twist in recent months concerned Spider-Man and Mary Jane, but it turns out it was just a massive fake-out. After shocking readers with the introduction of the children that Mary Jane had with a man named Paul, The Amazing Spider-Man reveals that these kids are not Mary Jane’s biological children, despite one of them looking purposefully like Peter Parker’s longtime lover, including MJ’s signature red hair.

In The Amazing Spider-Man #25, by Zeb Wells, John Romita Jr., Kaare Andrews, Scott Hanna, and Marcio Menyz, fans finally learn what happened after Spider-Man was forced to abandon Mary Jane in the demonic dimension of the Mayan god Wayep. Stuck in that hellish world with Paul, another victim of Wayep’s mad emissary Benjamin Rabin, Mary Jane had to survive for four years before Peter came to her rescue, as time flows differently in Wayep’s dimension. Meanwhile, MJ and Paul fell in love and found two abandoned children and took care of them creating a real family.

Marvel Mislead Its Readers On Mary Jane’s Children

Spider-Man’s Huge Mary Jane Twist Was Marvel’s Biggest Fake Out

When Mary Jane’s children were introduced in the first issue of the new Amazing Spider-Man series, fans were left to wonder how, in the few months that separated this new Web-Slinger book from the previous one, not only one of Marvel’s most famous couples broke up after recently getting back together, but Mary Jane also ended up with children who looked at least 6 or 7 years old. The most plausible explanation was that they were adopted, however, the little girl, Romi, bears a striking resemblance to Mary Jane, having the same red hair and green eyes.

It’s now clear that Marvel intentionally tried to mislead its readers, making them believe that Mary Jane somehow had biological children with Paul (in the Marvel universe, the impossible is ordinary), while this isn’t true. This detail is relevant because it means that Mary Jane’s current status can easily be reversed. The true parents of the children could show up someday to claim them, leaving MJ ‘free’ to go back to Peter, something that could have never happened if these were her biological kids.

Spider-Man Deserves His Happiness With Mary Jane

The current Spider-Man storyline is one of the most controversial in the long history of the character. The majority of fans were not happy about this latest breakup between Peter and Mary Jane, as they feel that Spider-Man has earned the right to find happiness in his tormented life. The circumstances of their separation are also strongly debated, and the revelation that the kids are not MJ’s biological children feels like one of the biggest fake-outs in the history of the company. Marvel apparently wants its readers to believe that Spider-Man will not find happiness with Mary Jane, even if it means tricking them.
