Spider-Man’s Avengers Rejection Makes 1 Future MCU Storyline Way Better

Spider-Man’s Avengers Rejection Makes 1 Future MCU Storyline Way Better

Spider-Man’s initial Avengers rejection was necessary for his character arc but also helped in setting up the MCU’s future Young Avengers storyline. After an impressive showing in Spider-Man: Homecoming, Tony Stark recruits Peter Parker for the Avengers. However, Peter turns down the offer even after spending the whole film trying to prove himself to his mentor. Realizing that he wasn’t quite ready to join the main team just yet, Peter’s rejection showed how the MCU’s young heroes have to stay true to themselves.

Unbeknownst at the time, Peter’s Spider-Man: Homecoming rejection actually affects a future MCU team. The Young Avengers have been teased throughout Phases 4 and 5. Made up of heroes who are younger in age, some of the notable Young Avengers members introduced so far include Kate Bishop, Kamala Khan, America Chavez, and Riri Williams. These characters are around the same age as Peter, and having Peter reject Iron Man’s Avengers offer justifies why these young heroes would need to form their own group.

Peter spent all of Spider-Man: Homecoming trying to prove to Tony that he was worthy of fighting alongside him, but it proved to be the wrong way to go about things. It’s when he finally stays true to himself as Spider-Man that Tony offers him the Avengers position, and Peter’s rejection of his offer shows that he knows his place. He wanted to stay grounded as a friendly neighborhood Spider-Man before moving to the big leagues, and his decision will have a lasting impact on the future Young Avengers.

If Peter had accepted Tony’s original offer, it would’ve rendered the Young Avengers almost pointless. The whole reason behind this superhero team is so that younger heroes can still do good while not having to face the massive threats that the Avengers do. Spider-Man becoming an Avenger after only his first film would’ve made the set-up of the Young Avengers much less impactful, as any young hero would’ve just been expected to join the main team from the get-go. This wouldn’t give them the chance to develop on their own and would’ve just repeated the same storyline of a young hero trying to fit in with a veteran group.

Why Spider-Man Is The Perfect Bridge Between The Avengers & Young Avengers For The MCU

Tom Holland as Spider-Man in MCU Phase 4

With how far Peter has come in the MCU, Spider-Man is currently the perfect link between the main Avengers team and the future Young Avengers. He can definitely relate more on a personal level to the younger heroes like Kamala and America, but his overall MCU storyline fits better with the Avengers. With Doctor Strange’s memory wipe spell, it’s unclear whether Spider-Man will still be an active member of the Avengers. However, he’ll still have all the experience he gained and can use it to connect with and lead the future Young Avengers.

Peter Parker wanted nothing more than to be recognized by his mentor Iron Man but ultimately turned down the initial offer to become an Avenger. This decision was crucial for his character as it allowed him to grow, and it’ll justify the setup for the MCU’s future Young Avengers team. The Young Avengers’ whole team dynamic is about learning as heroes without being in the main team, and Spider-Man becoming an Avenger off the bat would’ve hurt their purpose. The Young Avengers storyline is an anticipated MCU team-up, and the need for them in the MCU is still very much necessary, thanks to Spider-Man.
