Pre-production for the next Spider-Man film must be ramping up, because we’re starting to hear a few tidbits here and there. Recently, Tom Holland, the actor who will play Spider-Man in Marvel’s Cinematic Universe (MCU), gave us a peek at his workout routine for the role. Yet, Marvel is keeping their Spider-Man cards close to the chest for the upcoming Captain America: Civil War, which makes sense since they likely want to role the character out with a little more fanfare.
Now, thanks again to Holland, we know at least one of the locations where Spider-Man will film, and we have more information on Holland’s excitement to play the character.
SuperheroHype has an interview with the young actor, where he confirms that the upcoming Spider-Man film (directed by Jon Watts) will film in Atlanta sometime next year. He also mentioned that they might shoot in New York City as well, which would make sense since NYC is Spider-Man’s home.
Holland took time to explain why he thinks Spider-Man is such a unique super hero in the MCU:
“I think one of the most interesting things about Peter Parker for us is that he’s the only person in the MCU now that has a secret identity, so we all know who everyone else is. I think it’s quite interesting to go back to that hiding behind a mask.”
It’s true that since Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.) uttered the words, “I am Iron Man,” Marvel hasn’t really used secret identities in the MCU. A secret identity for Spider-Man would add a new and fresh perspective to the shared universe. Moreover, Peter Parker’s secret identity was a major part of the Civil War comic book storyline. If Holland is talking up the idea of Peter “hiding behind a mask” perhaps that means questions of Spider-Man’s identity will also factor into his role in Captain America: Civil War. Obviously nothing is confirmed, but that would be a logical and interesting way to introduce the wall-crawler into the MCU. With the Sokovia Accords possibly being the cinematic equivalent of the Superhero Registration Act, it stands to reason that people in power might suddenly take interest in this curious Spider-Man fellow webbing his way around NYC.
At any rate, Holland continued to talk about his love of the character:
“I have always been a huge fan of Spider-Man, and growing up, I had countless Spider-Man costumes, only two years ago did I go to a fancy dress party dressed as Spider-Man. I had this awesome morph suit where you can put your phone on your chest and spiders would crawl across the costume, it was awesome! He’s always been a big part of my life and a big part of boys’ lives because everybody can relate to him.”
It’s nice to see an actor so enamored with a role. Hopefully that will translate to the screen when we see Spider-Man in Captain America: Civil War next year, and in the Spider-Man solo film in 2017.
