Marvel’s latest film Ant-Man is currently the talk of the town with $24.8 million at the box office this week, earning it a spot again at no. 1. But next up for the beloved comic book movie studio will be Captain America: Civil War, followed by the introduction of Doctor Strange and the sequel to last year’s hit Guardians of the Galaxy.
The summer of 2017 will then see the return of Spider-Man in his own movie, though the famous web-slinger is actually set to make his first appearance in Captain America 3. British actor Tom Holland recently landed the coveted role, becoming the first person to play the fan-favorite character within the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Director Jon Watts (Clown, Cop Car) was also announced at the same time, but who exactly is writing the new Spider-Man film has remained somewhat of a mystery, until now.
A few weeks ago, it was reported that Marvel and Sony were looking at John Francis Daley and Jonathan M. Goldstein (Horrible Bosses) to write the script for the Spider-Man reboot. But the duo, so far, have refused to comment on the matter, while out promoting their new movie Vacation (which they both directed and co-wrote). Yet contracts must have just been signed and the dust settled, because Daley and Goldstein are now confirming the news is true:
“We can finally acknowledge that,” Daley recently said during a NPR interview. “This is the first time that we can say that we are writing it.” Goldstein added. “We’ve been saying no comment for the last week.” They then went on to explain why they’re ‘thrilled’ to work on the movie: “He’s a sharp kid and witty and kind of deals with the fact that he’s an outcast and a geek through humor,” Daley said. “It is sort of the safety net for geeks like us, so I think we can totally relate to where he’s coming from. As well as the superpowers, which we also have.”
Indeed, it does seem like Daley and Goldstein could have superpowers, since the two relatively unknown writer-directors have managed to get the job to write one of Marvel’s most anticipated movies. Apparently, Marvel was so impressed by their bid to direct Spider-Man, though the gig ultimately went to Watts, that they then brought them on as writers instead.
Recent Spider-Man films have seemed a little engulfed with drama, pulling away from the character’s more witty origins. With Daley and Goldstein’s background in comedy, Peter Parker should be able to return to his roots. Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige recently described that they’re looking for teenage, coming-of-age John Hughes tone in the new Spider-Man movie, so who better to pen it than the writers of Vacation.
