Spider-Man: Miles Morales Won’t Feature Other Playable Characters

Insomniac Games has revealed that players will only take direct control of Miles Morales in the upcoming Spider-Man: Miles Morales and that there are no other playable characters in the game. The developer has begun to release more information about the standalone expansion in the run-up to its release in November, giving fans a glimpse of what they should expect from the title.

Earlier this week, the studio detailed the differences between the two editions of Spider-Man: Miles Morales. The game is set to release on both the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5, with the next-gen version of the game having a few notable upgrades. This includes ray tracing to create a more realistic looking environment and haptic feedback through the PS5’s DualSense controller. But the gameplay across both editions will be identical.

An interview with Insomniac Games creative director Brian Horton has revealed that Miles Morales will be the only playable character in Spider-Man: Miles Morales. The game’s predecessor contained a number of gameplay moments where players took control of side characters such as Mary Jane. However, that will not be the case in the upcoming follow-up, where players will stay in control of Miles “100 percent of the time.” Speaking exclusively to Game Informer, the developer explained that the team wanted fans to experience the character as a hero and an ordinary kid. This required Insomniac Games to focus entirely on Miles rather than others in the story.

“We wanted to focus on the two parts of Miles. Miles as a kid, as a non-hero and then we have of course all his superhero stuff. But really focusing on Miles allowed us to put maximum effort into delivering the best Miles experience we could.”

Even though players won’t be taking direct control over other characters, Spider-Man: Miles Morales will feature a wide array of additional NPCs that Miles can interact with. These include the likes of Danika Hart, Hailey Copper, and Ganke Lee. The hero will even be able to have a furry companion in the form of a crime-fighting cat who helps the web-slinger in fights.

Although it might have been nice to explore other characters and get to see their perception of events in Spider-Man: Miles Morales, it is probably for the best that Insomniac Games is focusing entirely on the hero rather than anyone else. Especially when the segments in Marvel’s Spider-Man where players took control of side characters were one of the more universally negative aspects of the game. Hopefully, the change in direction should help player’s get more invested in Miles and his story without any distractions.

Spider-Man: Miles Morales is set to release on November 12 for PS4 and PS5.
