Sony Pictures’ Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse screens the first 35 minutes of the movie at New York Comic Con; fans and critics praise the Miles Morales film. Sony recently kicked off their live-action series of movies starring Spider-Man-related characters with Tom Hardy’s Venom. But the studio returns later this year with an animated tale about Miles Morales, a character created by Brian Michael Bendis for Marvel Comics who adopts the Spider-Man mantle.
Fans of Miles Morales have long hoped to see his story brought to life on the big screen, and Sony is giving viewers what they want – albeit in the animated realm. The LEGO Movie and 21 Jump Street filmmakers Phil Lord and Chris Miller wrote the script, while Peter Ramsey and Bob Persichetti directed the film. It stars Shameik Moore as Miles himself, Brian Tyree Henry as Miles’ father Jefferson Davis, Luna Lauren Velez as Miles’ mother Rio Morales, Jake Johnson as Peter Parker from an alternate universe.

To promote the December release of Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, the filmmakers and members of the cast appeared at New York Comic Con, where they screened the first 35 minutes of the movie. Although those in attendance were asked to promise not to spoil anything from the film – everyone in the audience was asked to stand and raise their right hand! – some offered their non-spoiler reactions on Twitter. For the most part, those in the audience at NYCC praised the animation style of Into the Spider-Verse, which pulls visual elements from the comic books and brings them to the screen, like text boxes with Miles’ thoughts and animation to emphasize sound effects. Further, like the trailers for Into the Spider-Verse, the footage features a variety of textures, which offer the animated movie a more comic book style texture.
Beyond the actual style of the animation, fans in the audiences responded well to many of the jokes featured in the footage – though it isn’t all fun and games. Into the Spider-Verse sets up a story that will have real stakes and real heart to it, as Miles learns about his powers and takes on the responsibility that comes with putting on the Spider-Man costume.
Lastly, what makes Into the Spider-Verse so unique – beyond adapting Miles’ story to the big screen, which brings more representation to the genre of feature-length superhero stories – is that there are other Spider-People in the movie. The film will explore the multiverse and introduce fans not only to Miles Morales but Spider-Gwen, Spider-Man Noir, Spider-Ham and Peni Parker. Altogether, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse will have plenty of Spidey characters and comic book style animation to please fans young and old – though, they’ll have to wait until December to see the full movie.
