Emmy-nominated cinematographer Matthew Lloyd has joined the crew of Spider-Man: Homecoming 2, accompanied by production designer Claude Pare.

For some time now, Marvel’s standard answer to their longterm plans has been that they’re focused on Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers 4. With both films having wrapped production, the House of Ideas is moving on to the next batch of all-action adventures. The Spider-Man: Homecoming sequel is due to start production in June, while scripts are in the works for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 and Black Widow.

Marvel and Sony were clearly delighted with Jon Watts’s work on Homecoming, and have signed him up for the sequel. Watts is currently recruiting cast and crew, and according to MCUExchange both Matthew Lloyd and Claude Pare have joined up. They cite “a source in the production” notifying them that these two stalwarts have signed on for the Marvel movie.

Lloyd’s experience with superheroes makes him ideally suited to the Homecoming sequel. He first worked with Marvel back in 2015, when he was recruited as cinematographer for the first season of Daredevil. There, he developed unique approaches to create the Man Without Fear’s unusual fighting style, a blend of acrobatics and boxing. Lloyd gained tremendous acclaim for his work on the “Hallway Scene,” which featured Daredevil walking down a hallway slugging thugs, presented as if it was shot in a single take.

Lloyd took an innovative approach, creating a dolly to maneuver around the action. Although he couldn’t know it at the time, he was setting the standard for Marvel’s Netflix slate. Every subsequent series has featured a homage to that “Hallway Scene.” Since then, Lloyd has continued to develop his experience with superheroes. He returned to Marvel’s Netflix universe with The Defenders, and then joined up with Marvel Studios for reshoots of Thor: Ragnarok.

Meanwhile, production designer Claude Pare is another name for fans to celebrate. Pare’s reputation has been boosted by his tremendous success on Rise of the Planet of the Apes, while this year’s IT saw him create one of 2017’s most memorable films. The quality of Pare’s teamwork with director Andres Muschietti was exceptional, and the film performed incredibly in the box office. Pare will be joining Marvel fresh from another superhero film, Fox’s X-Men: Apocalypse.

Spider-Man is one of the most challenging characters for any cinematographer to deal with. The Web Head’s fighting style depends on his agility and his webbing, meaning the cameras transition from close-up to wide-angle at speed. The amount of stunt work involved in your typical Spider-Man scene is breathtaking, as behind-the-scenes features have demonstrated. These two crew members are experts in their fields, and they’re clearly the right men to make the Homecoming sequel a success.
