Spider-Man: Far From Home almost included an appearance from Anthony Mackie’s Falcon as the new Captain America. With the dust now settled from Avengers: Endgame, a new era is set to dawn for the MCU. But the so called Infinity Saga still has one more movie left to go, as Peter Parker is set to return for Spider-Man: Far From Home, his second standalone since officially joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
When Far From Home begins, Tom Holland’s Parker is still dealing with the fallout from Endgame, and is naturally in a state of grief over the loss of his mentor Tony Stark. But Parker won’t have much time for mourning as he soon finds himself encountering a new, colossal threat in the Elementals, a group of mighty inter-dimensional beings who have been set loose on earth thanks to Thanos. Spider-Man also meets up with Jake Gyllenhaal’s Mysterio, who himself arrived on earth via a portal to another dimension. With Tony Stark no longer around to offer his support to Parker, Nick Fury takes on the role of mentoring the young hero through his latest adventure.
As it turns out, if Marvel Studios had gone through with one of their early plans, Spider-Man would have met up with another key MCU character in Far From Home. As revealed by Marvel Studios executive Eric Carroll in an interview with ComicBook.com, Falcon almost debuted in the movie as the new Captain America. Ultimately though, the decision was made to hold off on introducing the character until a later movie, so Far From Home could fully be Peter Parker’s show. Carroll explained:
“We briefly talked about bringing in Falcon as Captain America at the end, like maybe once Peter’s arced, and he’s sort of like leading the team, like maybe he calls in a favor. But we also thought it was really important to the arc of this movie that there not be other Avengers available to Nick Fury or Peter, so he’d have to step up and do it himself.”
Of course, Falcon was bestowed with the honor of being the new Captain America at the end of Endgame, after Steve Rogers decided to give up the shield, return to the past and pick up his old life together with Peggy Carter. Future movie plans for Falcon as Captain America are unknown at this time, but the character will be returning alongside The Winter Soldier for a Disney+ streaming series.
By the sounds of it, Marvel Studios brass decided Spider-Man: Far From Home would work better as a true showcase for Spider-Man, with little or no support from his fellow Avengers. Clearly, Spider-Man is a character who is more than capable of carrying his own movie, and after the epic nature of Endgame, it was possibly a wise decision for Marvel to scale things back a little, at least in terms of larger MCU ambitions, and let Spider-Man embark on somewhat of a solo adventure this time around. Of course, it seems inevitable that eventually some form of the Avengers will reassemble, with Spider-Man no doubt at the center of things, together with Falcon and whichever other characters Marvel decides to go forward with.
