Spider-Man 4 Can Finally Make Good On Tom Holland’s Superhero Suit Regret

Spider-Man 4 Can Finally Make Good On Tom Holland’s Superhero Suit Regret

The MCU’s Spider-Man 4 has the chance to give Tom Holland’s Peter Parker a signature quirk from Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man trilogy. As the MCU’s next Spider-Man movie advances in development, speculation on its plot, supporting cast, and villains continues to rise. After all, Spider-Man: No Way Home‘s ending changed everything for Tom Holland’s Peter Parker, leaving him back in square one with no allies and no high-tech resources. But just like most Peter Parker variants across the multiverse, the MCU’s Spider-Man is bound to bounce back on his own merit.

Throughout Spider-Man’s six-movie journey, Peter Parker has worn eight different MCU Spider-Man suits, most of them designed by Iron Man. Right after his first six months as a superhero, Peter received a new costume from Tony Stark. Spider-Man’s second-ever suit possessed a wide array of technological features, including a GPS tracker, multiple web construction combinations, and an integrated AI system. Such a massive upgrade prevented the MCU’s Spider-Man from facing the struggles of Spider-Men from other universes like Tobey Maguire’s Spidey, whose homemade suit came with certain unavoidable flaws.

Tobey Maguire’s Destroyed Suit And Mask Added More Drama To Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man Trilogy

In a 2021 interview with Jake’s Takes, Tom Holland expressed his envy of Tobey Maguire’s easily-torn Spider-Man costume, explaining that the suit’s deterioration “brought a kind of realism to the injuries” Spider-Man suffered in Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man trilogy. In six MCU appearances, Tom Holland’s Spider-Man suits have received quite a lot of damage, but their high-tech materials have made them extremely difficult to pierce through. So far, Holland’s Peter Parker has never had to deal with a broken mask that exposes his identity. Read Holland’s full comments below:

“I think something that I really wish we had done with our movies is kind of the tattered suit stuff. You know how he always has the rips in his costumes and the rips on the mask? I really like that because it brought a kind of realism to the injuries that Spider-Man can get.”

Spider-Man’s suit and mask get torn apart in Spider-Man and Spider-Man 3, and his mask gets burnt in Spider-Man 2. In all three movies, the damaged suit serves as a narrative purpose: in Spider-Man, it reveals Peter Parker’s real identity to the Green Goblin, motivating the villain to manipulate Peter. In Spider-Man 2, Spider-Man removes his burnt mask, accidentally showing the civilians on the train that the man behind the mask isn’t an invincible god, but a selfless young man. And in Spider-Man 3, Spider-Man’s exposed face helps him connect with Sandman and Harry Osborn.

Spider-Man 4 Can Perfectly Flip Peter Parker’s MCU Role

Spider-Man 4 is rumored to introduce one big Marvel character, and thanks to him, Marvel can finally flip Peter Parker’s role in the MCU.

Why Spider-Man’s Homemade Suit Is So Important To His Character

One trait that makes Spider-Man stand out is his down-to-earth nature. While he has received various upgrades in the comics, Peter Parker retains his humility and independence — both represented in Spider-Man’s homemade suits. Not to mention, the intense beatings Spider-Man usually takes require him to have plenty of easily replaceable suits. It’s common to see Peter walk out of a battle with a fully destroyed costume, only to return stronger than before wearing a new copy. Now that Tom Holland’s Peter Parker is creating his own suits again, the MCU’s Spider-Man 4 can emphasize this aspect of the character.
