Spider-Man 2099’s New Demonic Form is Even Too Wild for The Spider-Verse

Spider-Man 2099’s New Demonic Form is Even Too Wild for The Spider-Verse

Spider-Man 2099’s demonic form is even too wild for the Spider-Verse. The Spider-Verse is full of unique Spider-Man variants, some noble and heroic while others are evil. Spider-Man 2099 is one such variant, keeping Nueva York safe from street criminals and corporate raiders alike. Now, in a special variant cover for Symbiote Spider-Man #3, Miguel O’Hara is possessed by the Ghost Rider, creating his darkest look yet.

Marvel unveiled Jan Bazaldua’s cover for Symbiote Spider-Man #3, which will be written by Peter David and drawn by Roge Antonio, in a post on their website. The cover, part of a larger initiative imagining select Marvel icons as if they were possessed by Ghost Rider, features a flame-headed Spider-Man 2099 with a pointed, devil-like tail.

Instead of spinning his webs, he is wielding a flaming chain, wrapped around his arms. Bazaldua has created the perfect mash-up of Ghost Rider and Spider-Man 2099.

Spider-Man 2099 Is a Prominent Spider-Verse Variant

In the early 1990s, Marvel, taking advantage of pre-millennium anxieties, created the Marvel 2099 imprint, which gave classic characters such as Spider-Man and the Punisher futuristic make-overs, and placed them in a world that had not seen heroes in decades. Spider-Man 2099, created by Peter David and Rick Leonardi, was the vanguard of the imprint. In the year 2099, Spider-Man was Miguel O’Hara, who, like Peter Parker, received spider-like powers in a lab accident. While there were differences in powers and abilities, Miguel O’Hara is firmly part of the Spider-Verse, and has appeared in Sony’s animated Spider-Verse films.

The Spider-Verse, formally introduced in the 2010s, consists of every Spider-Person across the multiverse, including Spider-Man 2099. In addition to well known characters such as Peter Porker the Spectacular Spider-Ham, Miles Morales and Spider-Gwen, the Spider-Verse features some truly bizarre variants. For example, the Spider-Car, alias Peter Parkedcar, is the Spider-Being for a world of cars. Some of the most popular variants came together in 2018’s Into the Spider-Verse and its follow-up, Across the Spider-Verse. These movies have made other Spider-People, such as Morales and Spider-Man 2099, into household names.

And now, courtesy Jan Bazaldua, Spider-Man 2099 takes on a sinister and demonic appearance, having just been possessed by the Ghost Rider. Miguel O’Hara’s body underwent massive physical changes in the wake of his accident, and under the influence of Ghost Rider, goes through even more. He now sports a devilish tail that would make Nightcrawler envious, and his claws somehow look even deadlier. Both characters are horror-based: Ghost Rider in the supernatural and Spider-Man 2099 in body horror. Ghost Rider has brought out Spider-Man 2099’s darkest tendencies, making the character too wild for the Spider-Verse.
