“Sorry Nolan”: Barbie vs. Oppenheimer Debate Rages After Marketing Begins For Hasbro Movie

The Barbie vs. Oppenheimer debate rages on as the Hasbro movie kicks off its marketing campaign. As two of the summer’s most anticipated movies, Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer and Greta Gerwig’s Barbie open on the exact same day in theaters – July 21. The two films hail from acclaimed Oscar-nominated directors and feature star-studded casts, although they couldn’t be more different. Oppenheimer is a partially black-and-white biopic chronicling the creation of the atomic bomb, and Barbie is based on the Mattel fashion dolls and set in the glitz and glam of “Barbieland.”The Barbie movie recently released a batch of character posters revealing a total of 11 Barbies and 5 Kens, confirming a big theory about the movie. In response, some took to Twitter to preemptively declare it the winner in the battle against Oppenheimer, with @GeekZoneGZ writing, “Sorry, Nolan.” Several others jumped on board the Barbie bandwagon, saying they will see it multiple times in theaters instead of Oppenheimer. Who Will Win The Oppenheimer Vs. Barbie Box Office Battle?

While Barbie‘s character posters may have given the movie a slight edge, Oppenheimer has also had a strong marketing campaign. Nolan’s film has already released two trailers showcasing its stunning visuals and an equally star-studded cast led by Cillian Murphy. The visionary filmmaker has also made headlines for the innovative feats accomplished on Oppenheimer, including recreating the first nuclear blast, the 1945 Trinity Test, without the use of CGI. While Barbie may have taken a momentary lead, Oppenheimer seems poised to win the bigger box office battle. Like every Nolan film, Oppenheimer is tailor-made for the theatrical experience.

Though the Oppenheimer vs. Barbie battle has captured social media, the contest also seems largely unnecessary. Many movie fans are already planning a double feature of the two films regardless of the order. No matter which film emerges victorious at the box office, moviegoers will undoubtedly be the winners on the weekend of July 21, with both Barbie and Oppenheimer opening in theaters.
