However, The Dark Knight’s motivations for his meddling may not be entirely altruistic, as Bruce could be angling to establish “in-law status” with another DC hero.
Mark Waid and Dan Mora’s Batman / Superman: World’s Finest #8 carries on the escapades of The Dark Knight and The Man of Steel, accompanied by Dick Grayson as Robin and Kara Zor-El as Supergirl.
In prior installments of this legendary series, Robin and Supergirl have joined forces, albeit with some reluctance, showcasing a comically antagonistic dynamic. However, Bruce seems to interpret their banter differently, encouraging Dick to invite Kara on a date, leaving no doubt that BATMAN SHIPS ROBIN AND SUPERGIRL!
Batman Shipped Nightwing With Supergirl When Dick Grayson Was Still Robin
Batman / Superman: World’s Finest #8 unveils a humorous yet heartwarming exchange between Batman and Robin, highlighting the depth of their father-son bond as Bruce meddles in Dick’s affairs, bombarding him with rapid-fire inquiries about his relationship with Kara, all delivered with a teasing edge. Batman even praises Kara to Dick, remarking, “She was a tremendous help today.” Bruce then not-so-subtly suggests that Robin should ask Supergirl out, prompting Dick to respond with a flat, “You’re a riot,” perfectly capturing the essence of a quintessential parent-teenager interaction on the subject of romance.
Batman’s encouragement for Robin to pursue Supergirl takes on an amusing twist when considering what Bruce might gain from his son’s romantic involvement with Kara. In Waid’s World’s Finest run, Batman and Superman are already as close as two heroes can be. However, a potential union between Supergirl and Robin could further solidify their bond, virtually making them in-laws despite Kara being Clark’s cousin rather than daughter. Imagining Superman and Batman as in-laws adds a humorous dynamic to their relationship, even if it’s unlikely that this was Bruce’s actual intention.

Despite Waid teasing the potential for an epic romance between Robin and Supergirl, Batman / Superman: World’s Finest #12 revealed that Dick and Kara are better off as allies than lovers after the two went on a date that turned out to be an absolute disaster, so much so that Dick changed his hero identity to avoid Supergirl. So, while Batman’s hopes of having SuperBat babies running around the manor are dashed, this is good news for Batgirl, who won’t have to worry about Supergirl swooping in anytime soon to steal Nightwing from her.
