The X-Men movie universe is one that’s about to go through some big changes, with Hugh Jackman hanging up his claws as Wolverine once the third and final installment to his big screen series comes to an end next month, with the release of Logan. He’s the lynchpin that has held the franchise together to-date, so some major evolutions and changes are sure to be headed our way, with the movies that are released as part of the 20th Century Fox X-Men live adaptations in the future.
Game of Thrones actress Sophie Turner made her debut to the series in X-Men: Apocalypse as Jean Grey. Proving to be a fan-favorite character following the film’s release last year, she’ll return for more of the mutant flicks in the future, and has now revealed exactly which project she’ll be working on next.
Chatting to HeyUGuys at the 2017 BAFTAs, Turner revealed that X-Men: Supernova (as the film is currently known) will be one of her biggest upcoming projects. She said:
“We’re about to start shooting the next X-Men, we’ve just finished shooting Season 7 of [Game of] Thrones, and I’ve got a couple of movies to do before X-Men starts. And then we go on to Season 8! So I’ve got a busy year lined up.”
The other movies Turner references are likely Huntsville – directed by Eric England – and Berlin, I Love You, which Jared Leto is also rumored to be taking a leading role in. However, it’s Supernova many are arguably most excited to see Turner take part in, with Jean Grey’s story arc as Dark Phoenix widely teased throughout Apocalypse and now all but confirmed in a recent movie synopsis.
Previous news reports claimed that Supernova would begin shooting in Montreal on June 15, 2017, but there’s every chance that the start of filming has been bumped up. There was always that early report from Michel Trudel, President of MEL Studios who claimed that the film’s shoot would begin in May, 2017. Who’s to say that this wasn’t the original plan and that it hasn’t been reverted back to?
Fans should expect to see the series move into the 1990s with the new flick, allowing those behind the story to bring one of the most faithful comic book adaptations to consumers that the big screen has ever seen. The story of Dark Phoenix is one that purists would love to see given another shot following Brett Ratner’s rarely-celebrated attempt in X-Men: The Last Stand. Whether or not the writing on Supernova and Turner’s take on Grey will live up to the hype however remains to be seen, of course.
