Sony’s Mystery 2021 Marvel Film: What Spider-Man Spin-Off Is After Venom 2?

Sony’s Mystery 2021 Marvel Film: What Spider-Man Spin-Off Is After Venom 2?

Sony has added an untitled Spider-Man spinoff to its schedule, giving it an October 2021 release date – but which movie from Sony’s Marvel universe could it be? As the Marvel Cinematic Universe continues its expansion, so does Sony’s universe of Marvel characters, which has a couple of movies lined up before Spider-Man 3 arrives. Sony’s universe began in 2018 with Venom, which introduced Tom Hardy as Eddie Brock/Venom, as well as a weird Cletus Kasady (Woody Harrelson) in a mid-credits scene.

Although Venom wasn’t well received by critics, who didn’t like the script and its lack of connection to Spider-Man, the movie was a box office success, and viewers had a more positive reaction to it, finding it entertaining and funny. It’s not surprising, then, that a sequel was greenlit in January 2019 and set for an October 2020 release – but in the meantime, audiences will get to meet another Spider-Man enemy in Morbius. Directed by Daniel Espinosa and with Jared Leto as the title character, the movie will follow Dr. Michael Morbius, who suffers from a rare blood disease, as he tries a dangerous cure with even more dangerous after-effects.

The first trailer for Morbius revealed some big connections with Spider-Man, which open a lot of possibilities for future movies in Sony’s Marvel universe. Now, with an untitled movie getting an October 2021 release date, fans are wondering what it could be and how much it will connect with Spider-Man.

Sony’s Spider-Man Spin-Offs After Venom 2

Sony’s Mystery 2021 Marvel Film: What Spider-Man Spin-Off Is After Venom 2?

Morbius has a July 2020 release date, Venom 2 is arriving in October 2020, and Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse 2 is aiming for an April 2022 release – between and after that are no confirmed titles. Sony has a lot of Spider-Man related movies in development, such as Nightwatch, Kraven the Hunter, Black Cat, Silver Sable, The Sinister Six, Madame Web, and Silk, but not all of them are moving forward as smoothly as fans would like. For example: Black Cat and Silver Sable were originally going to be one female team-up movie titled Silver & Black, but the studio decided to rework it as separate movies, but there haven’t been any major updates. Nightwatch is also trapped in development hell, and Madame Web is in very early stages of development as a script is in the works.

The only two possibilities are Kraven the Hunter and The Sinister Six. A Kraven the Hunter movie has been in development for a while now, with Richard Wenk on board to write the script and teasing that Sergei Kravinoff will be after Spider-Man. However, Kraven the Hunter doesn’t have a director nor a lead actor yet, and if Sony wanted to release the movie in October 2021, it should have all that set by now. The other option is The Sinister Six, which already has half its team ready. Spider-Man: Homecoming introduced Adrian Toomes/Vulture (Michael Keaton) and Mac Gargan/Scorpion, and with Morbius joining the fun soon, a Sinister Six movie sounds like the most obvious choice – more so because Vulture will make an appearance in Morbius, which can help set the team up.

It shouldn’t be long for Sony to reveal which movie will take that release date, as it should enter pre-production in the next couple of months to meet the date. Whether Kraven the Hunter, The Sinister Six, or something else, it’s going to be interesting to see how much they will connect with Spider-Man, especially because it will arrive after Spidey’s (supposedly) final movie in the MCU.
