Sony is subtly dissing the Marvel Cinematic Universe on TikTok, and it has everything to do with Spider-Man: No Way Home. Sony and Marvel’s upcoming film, No Way Home, finally brings the MCU and past Spider-Man movies together. Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) and Peter Parker (Tom Holland) accidentally open a hole in the Multiverse in the new film, and the mistake allows past Spider-Man villains to enter the MCU. Now, Alfred Molina’s Doc Ock, Jamie Foxx’s Electro, and Willem Dafoe’s Green Goblin are all back, and fans have responded. Pre-sales for the film already crashed several ticketing websites due to the demand.
Sony and Marvel haven’t always seen eye-to-eye over Spider-Man and their cinematic universes. The studios had a widely known rift in their relationship in 2019, reportedly due to money issues. And The Story of Marvel Studios: The Making of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, a book chronicling the history of the MCU, tells of another clash over the since-canceled film The Amazing Spider-Man 3. During a heated discussion about the film, Sony producer Amy Pascal supposedly even threw a sandwich at Marvel boss Kevin Feige.
Sony’s marketing for the upcoming Spider-Man film may also be a sly Marvel diss. In addition to the Spider-Man: No Way Home trailers and posters, Sony recently created a TikTok account for The Daily Bugle, the fake news organization headed by J.K. Simmons’ J. Jonah Jameson. The account already uploaded a few videos to spread conspiracy theories and diss Spider-Man; however, one detail doesn’t look too kindly on Marvel either. The Daily Bugle page only follows three other accounts, and none of them are Marvel. As of press time, The Daily Bugle follows Sony Pictures, the official Spider-Man movie account, and the official TikTok account. That’s it.
The fact that Sony’s The Daily Bugle account isn’t following any of Marvel’s TikTok accounts is odd. After all, both Marvel and Marvel Studios have official TikTok pages. The Marvel account has even posted content about No Way Home, including Tom Holland surprising fans at a screening for the trailer. Notably, Marvel and Marvel Studios’ TikTok accounts don’t follow any other accounts. However, since The Daily Bugle already follows three accounts, it’d make sense to follow Marvel’s content, especially when it’s posting No Way Home updates. So ignoring Marvel on TikTok is a strange oversight at best.
Regardless of any Spider-Man: No Way Home marketing disses, the future looks good for Marvel and Sony. Recently, Sony’s Amy Pascal touted a new Spider-Man trilogy with Tom Holland on the way. “This is not the last movie that we are going to make with Marvel – [this is not] the last Spider-Man movie,” Pascal said. Tom Holland also commented on the Spider-Man news, adding, “It looks like it’s an incredibly bright future ahead.” The Daily Bugle already has a vendetta against Spider-Man. When it comes to the TikTok diss, perhaps the fake outlet simply has it out for Marvel as well.
