Sonic The Hedgehog 3 Must Make Jim Carrey’s Dr. Robotnik Wish Come True Now

Sonic The Hedgehog 3 Must Make Jim Carrey’s Dr. Robotnik Wish Come True Now

Sonic the Hedgehog 3‘s major villain update means that Jim Carrey’s one wish for Dr. Robotnik must come to fruition. In February 2024, it was confirmed that Jim Carrey would return as Robotnik in Sonic 3. This announcement came as a shock to many after the iconic actor announced his desire to retire from the industry after the release of Sonic the Hedgehog 2.

However, Carrey’s return only raises the anticipation for Sonic the Hedgehog 3‘s release date of December 20, 2024. Combined with the confirmation of Shadow the Hedgehog’s involvement in the sequel as well as the Knuckles spin-off TV show, 2024 is shaping up to be a vital year for the Sonic the Hedgehog live-action franchise. Given the return of Carrey, it seems only right that a wish the actor had for his character in the second movie be made a reality for the culmination of the Sonic trilogy.

Sonic The Hedgehog 3 Can Finally Let Jim Carrey Wear Dr. Robotnik’s Round Suit

The wish in question concerned the character, or more specifically the appearance, of Dr. Robotnik. Carrey brings Robotnik to vibrant life in the Sonic the Hedgehog movies, with the character edging ever closer to the appearance of his video game counterpart with every new installment. The actor seemed to like this approach, with Carrey sharing that he wanted to wear a round suit in Sonic the Hedgehog 2 to match the comically rotund design of Robotnik from the game franchise.

Exclusive: Jim Carrey says he wanted his Dr. Ivo Robotnik character to have the round suit look from the video games for Sonic The Hedgehog 2.

Unfortunately, Sonic the Hedgehog 2‘s higher-ups shot the idea down. This meant that the only change in Carrey’s appearance between the first and second movies was the hilariously large mustache associated with Robotnik. With Sonic the Hedgehog 3 and Carrey’s return as the character, the round suit could finally be provided and complete the final step in a three-phase plan to make Carrey’s Robotnik match his video game counterpart.

How Sonic The Hedgehog 3 Can Explain Dr. Robotnik’s New Look

While including Robotnik’s appearance from the video games would be hilarious in Sonic the Hedgehog 3, it would be somewhat difficult to explain. One possibility, however, stems from the ending of Sonic the Hedgehog 2. At the end of the film, Robotnik is defeated by Super Sonic and goes missing in the aftermath of the battle. His defeat could lead him down a dark, depressive path which causes him to gain weight in a similar arc to that of Thor from Avengers: Infinity War, only for him to emerge years later in Sonic the Hedgehog 3.

Another possibility is that Sonic the Hedgehog 3 simply embraces the overly silly elements of its predecessors. Robotnik fell from a great height in the second movie’s climax, though this could easily be survived if one had a comically large fat suit at their disposal. The silly elements would then need to come into play to explain why the round suit persevered with Robotnik’s appearance in Sonic the Hedgehog 3, yet the franchise is so inherently fun that this would not be a difficult task at all.
