Some Sonic Frontiers Bosses Will Be Impossible Without Super Sonic

A recent interview with Sonic Frontiers director Morio Kishimoto has revealed that some bosses in the upcoming Sonic Frontiers may be unbeatable without the blue hedgehog’s iconic Super Sonic form. Sonic Frontiers, the latest installment in the long-running Sonic franchise, is set to release on November 8, 2022. The game will feature series protagonist Sonic as he explores a mysterious new setting with wide open zones.

As Sega’s latest endeavor in the Sonic franchise, Sonic Frontiers may be facing something of an uphill battle. Even disregarding the somewhat poor reception of past entries such as Sonic Forces, Sonic Frontiers‘ first impressions garnered a mixed reaction when the game first revealed its gameplay. More recent showings have potentially painted the game in a better light, however, and while first impressions can be hard to shake, Sonic Frontiers has at the very least promised a much-needed shake-up to the 3D Sonic formula.

In a recent interview with IGN, Morio Kishimoto, the director of Sonic Frontiers, revealed that some bosses in the game will be impossible to defeat without Super Sonic, saying that “there will be some bosses that blue Sonic can’t even scratch.” The statement is in line with the most recent trailer for Frontiers shown at TGS 2022 courtesy of the Sonic the Hedgehog YouTube account, which shows Sonic transforming into Super Sonic in order to fight a colossal enemy. Kishimoto goes on to imply that bosses in Sonic Frontiers may be tougher than long-time fans of the series may expect, noting that Super Sonic has traditionally been only used for final bosses in previous games.

Sonic Frontiers Director Reveals Super Sonic Boss Fights

Following the news that Sonic Frontiers will be the Sonic game with the most content, the integration of Super Sonic and the Chaos Emeralds into the story of Frontiers comes as welcome news for fans of the series. It remains to be seen how exactly the transformation will function, but Sega has at the very least confirmed that Super Sonic will feature an entirely changed moveset from Sonic’s normal state. With combat being a large focus for Frontiers, the transformation could give players many new options for dealing with enemies.

Sonic Frontiers could very well mark a successful break from the typical 3D Sonic formula that has seemed to stagnate as of Sonic Forces. Certainly, Sega seems to pulling out all the stops to please fans of the franchise, especially if recent Frontiers leaks hinting at the inclusion of Knuckles prove to be true. With the release of Sonic Frontiers on November 8, 2022, fast approaching, it remains to be seen whether or not the franchise can reclaim some of its former glory.
