Solar Opposites: Every Rick & Morty Easter Egg

Solar Opposites: Every Rick & Morty Easter Egg

Hulu’s Solar Opposites includes a few Rick and Morty Easter eggs that loosely connect the two animated shows. Adult Swim partnered with Dan Harmon and Justin Roiland for Rick and Morty several years ago and watched as the sci-fi series developed a massive fan base. The success allowed Justin Roiland to create a brand new animated series for Hulu, Solar Opposites, that received strong praise upon its release in 2020.

Solar Opposites is another adult animated sci-fi comedy created by Roiland and Mike McMahan. The show is centered around a family of aliens stuck living in suburban America. The family is led by Korvo (voiced by Roiland), who is a scientist who hates being on Earth and desperately wants to leave the planet. The rest of the family includes Terry (Thomas Middleditch), Yumyulack (Sean Giambrone), Jesse (Mary Mack), and The Pupa (Sagan McMahan). However, not everyone in Korvo’s family shares his disdain for their lives on Earth. Their adventures in Solar Opposites have drawn plenty of comparisons to Rick and Morty with giant monsters, aliens, and portals all factoring into the show’s events.

The similarities between Solar Opposites and Rick and Morty initially led viewers to wonder if the two shows were connected. That is not the case as far as both shows are currently constructed, and them airing on different networks even makes a crossover difficult to imagine. However, that hasn’t stopped a few subtle Rick and Morty Easter eggs to appear in Solar Opposites.

Schwifty Live Jazz

Solar Opposites: Every Rick & Morty Easter Egg

The first Rick and Morty Easter egg in Solar Opposites comes in the show’s debut episode. The story largely revolves around Korvo and Terry bringing a kid’s TV show character to life, while Yumyulack and Jesse are bullied at school – leading them to shrink and kidnap the bully. As Yumyulack and Jesse spend time in James Earl Jones High School, they are briefly shown standing in front of a poster for “Schwifty Live Jazz” from 7-8 pm on Friday. Schwifty is a well-known word for Rick and Morty viewers, as Rick and Morty saved Earth by performing “Get Schwifty” in an intergalactic music competition.

The next Rick and Morty Easter egg comes in Solar Opposite‘s third episode, “The Quantum Ring.” The episode’s main story revolves around Korvo wanting to become a magician and faking his death to bring the family closer together. Near the end of the episode, how Korvo pulled off this plan was shown in a quick montage. In the back of an office, one picture frame contains a photo that appears to be of a kid Morty Smith. The yellow shirt is Morty’s signature look, but his haircut is quite different here.

Solar Opposites included another quick Rick and Morty Easter egg in episode 6, “The P.A.T.R.I.C.I.A. Device.” The episode focuses on Korvo and Terry creating a female robot modeled after sitcom characters. However, P.A.T.R.I.C.I.A. evolves into a killing machine and rampages through the neighborhood. As the episode scans through P.A.T.R.I.C.I.A.’s destruction, a photo of Summer Smith can be seen briefly.
