‘Snow White and the Huntsman’ & ‘Dark Shadows’ TV Spots, Featurette [Update]

While Snow White and the Huntsman and Dark Shadows couldn’t be more different in some ways, they both share a vaguely similar gothic aesthetic that has been sorely missing from the cinematic landscape for far too long.

Today, we’ve got TV spots for both Snow White and Dark Shadows, and a featurette for Snow White depicting the first day of shooting.

Snow White and the Huntsman

The spot for Snow White is essentially a condensed version of the same footage we’ve seen from the more fleshed-out trailers – for example, the five-minute extended preview that was released last week.

Now, check out the Snow White featurette, which depicts the first day of shooting –and a massive battle between two armies:

Once again, the footage here is driving home the point that this Snow White (Kristen Stewart) is a badass; this evil queen (Charlize Theron) is straight out of a horror film; and this version of the story is grittier, darker, and more extreme than all the previous versions. Big monsters! An axe-wielding Chris Hemsworth! And edgy music (that sounds a lot like the music from Tron Legacy, for some reason)!

While Hollywood’s constant push to be “edgy” and “dark” can be annoying from time to time, Snow White and the Huntsmen has so far come off fairly well in that regard – at least, in the opinion of this Screen Rant writer.

Dark Shadows

Obviously, Dark Shadows is on the complete opposite end of the tonal spectrum from Snow White and the Huntsman. Whereas Snow White looks to be a deadly serious, Shadows seems to be more in line with Tim Burton’s early semi-comedic works – Beetlejuice, in particular.

UPDATE: A Second TV Spot has been unveiled! 

This is the first time we’ve seen Barnabas Collins take a bite out of someone, I believe. Otherwise, the TV spot is mostly reminiscent of the previous trailers. Light on creepy vibes, heavy on Tim Burtons-esque hijinks.

Frankly, count me among those who appreciate that Burton is going for something with Shadows that is unabashedly comical and wacky. Say what you will about the man’s recent track record, but a film about a tragically cursed vampire woken up in the 1970s to learn the true meaning of family has the opportunity to be hilarious and bizarre to the extreme – in a potentially fantastic way. Let’s hope that’s what we end up getting.
