Paramount Pictures reveals the release date and bonus features for the 4K Ultra-HD and Blu-ray releases of Snake Eyes: G.I. Joe Origins. Serving as a soft reboot to the live-action Hasbro film franchise, the story revolves around Henry Golding’s titular loner as he is brought in to the Arashikage ninja clan by Tommy Arashikage after saving his life, putting them both on the paths to become Snake Eyes and Storm Shadow and join the Cobra and G.I. Joe organizations. Alongside Golding, the cast for Snake Eyes included Warrior star Andrew Koji as Arashikage, Úrsula Corberó as the Baroness, Samara Weaving as Scarlett, Iko Uwais as Hard Master and Peter Mensah as Blind Master.
Following numerous delays in its release schedule, Snake Eyes: G.I. Joe Origins hit theaters in July 2021 to mixed-to-negative reviews from critics, who highlighted the lackluster writing and poorly shot action sequences while commending the film’s performances and production values. The film would also struggle at the box office, grossing just $37 million worldwide against an $88 million production budget and an estimated $160-175 million break-even point. With a couple of months behind the film’s release on digital platforms, Paramount has exciting news for those who enjoyed the film.
Paramount has announced that Snake Eyes: G.I. Joe Origins will be hitting shelves on 4K UHD, Blu-ray, DVD and a special SteelBook on October 19 with a list of special features that include deleted scenes, making-of featurettes and a short film revealing the origins and secrets of Snake Eyes’ legendary sword Morning Light. The prequel will also be included in a three-film combo pack with the first two G.I. Joe films, The Rise of Cobra and Retaliation. Check out the special features and home media artwork below:

Snake Eyes: G.I. Joe Origins certainly seemed prime for success in the lead up to the film’s release, choosing to take the same soft reboot approach as Transformers prequel Bumblebee in the hopes of getting the franchise back on track. Though it does sit as the best-reviewed G.I. Joe installment, the low box office numbers have proven worrisome for those hopeful a future follow-up could better utilize the potential the film had. Prior to the film’s debut, it was announced Paramount had tapped Snake Eyes writers Joe Shrapnel and Anna Waterhouse to pen a follow-up with Golding returning that would further expand the G.I. Joe film universe from the foundations of the prequel.
The future of the G.I. Joe film franchise is certainly unknown following Snake Eyes: G.I. Joe Origins‘ dismal box office return, though the film is not without its fans who are sure to be excited to get their hands on the physical copies of the film. Much like many films that saw simultaneous theatrical and streaming releases, the prequel’s home media release could very well ensure a follow-up’s greenlighting if it proves successful enough. Only time will tell when Snake Eyes: G.I. Joe Origins hits shelves on 4K UHD, Blu-ray and DVD on October 19.
