Six Rare Magic: The Gathering Cards (Including A Black Lotus) Are Going On Auction

Six of the rarest and most expensive Magic: The Gathering cards are going up for auction, including a copy of Magic: The Gathering‘s expensive Black Lotus card. All of the cards are members of a group referred to by fans as the “Power Nine,” and they’re among the oldest and most powerful cards in Magic: The Gathering, and are banned in most formats.

The Power Nine are Ancestral Recall, Black Lotus, Mox Emerald, Mox Jet, Mox Pearl, Mox Ruby, Mox Sapphire, Timetwister, and Time Walk. All of these are incredibly powerful relative to their cost, with Ancestral Recall forcing a three card draw for one blue mana, Black Lotus and the Moxes being artifacts that generate mana for no cost, Time Walk giving the player a whole extra turn, and Timetwister letting them draw a whole new hand. All of these cards will be featured (albeit, in an unplayable fashion) in the upcoming Magic: The Gathering 30th Anniversary Edition set.

Six of the Power Nine will be going up for auction soon. The RealReal has announced that it’s hosting an auction for a 1993 Beta Black Lotus, (Artist Proof), a1993 Alpha Mox Pearl, a 1993 Alpha Mox Sapphire, a 1993 Alpha Ancestral Recall, a 1993 Alpha Time Walk, and a 1993 Alpha Timetwister. The combined worth of the cards is an estimated $860,000 and the Black Lotus alone will be priced at $750,000, making it the most expensive consigned item in the history of The RealReal.

This particular version of the Black Lotus card has sold for high amounts in the past, as rapper Post Malone spent $800,000 on a Black Lotus card earlier this year. The Black Lotus card that’s going up on The RealReal‘s auction was given a grading of 8 by Beckett. The historical value of the Black Lotus has made it one of the most expensive cards in the world, and there is always interest whenever one goes up for sale.

The six cards will be going up for auction on October 11, offering a rare chance for collectors to be able to grab some of the rarest cards in the history of Magic: The Gathering. This is a chance to grab most of the Power Nine in one auction, for those with the cash to actually afford them. It’s amazing to think that Magic: The Gathering is celebrating its 30th anniversary and some of its oldest cards are still selling for hundreds of thousands of dollars.
